Just to add, you didn't answer it correctly either, so gets treated the same as an incorrect answer. The semantics are irrelevant in this case, of which you seem the most bothered about. There isn't some kind of purgatory or limbo for passes. You may as well have given your shoe answer- if you "knew" it in some way, it would have been an at least an educated guess and not even a shot in the dark.
