Complete nonsense, there are tens of thousands of proper quizzers who would wipe the floor with the vast majority of contestants on The Chase.

Go and watch some matches in a quiz league - I think you will be surprised at how much more knowledgeable the team members are than the people they put on this show.
For many of us, part of the appeal of this show is that the contestants are not experienced quizzers, but people who have normal general knowledge, i.e. strong in some areas, weak in others.

The day when it's full of people who devote their lives to swotting up on lists of facts is the day I stop watching.

I think that's more to do with the fact that there was a distinct change in the style of questions for episodes from Series 6 (2012) onwards. They became longer and trickier ones became more common. (Mark himself confirmed this). Prior to this, it wasn't uncommon for high cash builders (£14,000 being a landmark high) or high scoring Final Chases. (As high as 28 a couple of times.)

It's basically why teams scoring over 20/Chasers catching 20+ scores on the challenge repeats (which go up to Series 4) are so common when now they're a rarity, it was a genuinely easier show back then.
Aha - so it's not the contestants getting thicker, it's the questions getting harder!

Not sure I'd agree with that. I think the questions are easier than they used to be in the early days.

So the question he was hesitant with in the cash builder was the pop culture one (Graham Norton, which he got right but had to think) and then the first 2 of his questions in the game are pop culture related?

EDIT: Mark just said he was "devastated by pop culture"

Did seem to be an unusually narrow variety of questions.

He thought the ship in the Poseidon Adventure capsized in the Caribbean Sea and he's 'Brain of Britain'?

Pop. Culture seems to be at the bottom of the list of interests of very clever people.

Certainly. Which again makes it seem very suspicious that the majority of his questions were pop culture related. I'd question whether those questions were selected specifically for that head to head.

Her hair seems to be experiencing adverse weather conditions that isn't affecting anyone else in the studio.
