It must be a relief to the contestants when the question setters take the easy way out, and, instead of genuine alternative answers, just use synonyms of one of the words.
I had no idea of the 1920s publisher, but knew that Random House existed. So there's a good chance the others didn't. Not that that helped the contestant. |

A colour letting Shaun down again but he just won with a second to go.
Again his long pauses almost cost him the game. |

The way he raised his voice for "Geoffrey Chaucer" was curious as well. All part of the fun.

I had no idea of the 1920s publisher, but knew that Random House existed. So there's a good chance the others didn't. Not that that helped the contestant. So the question's basically testing if you had heard of Random House and, if you had, could correctly deduce it had to be the answer. If the other two were genuine alternative answers then knowing that Random House existed would be of no help and people would just be guessing, since hardly anybody will know the answer. |

I thought that was a bit odd as well. It's OK doing that if you know it's right and you've got plenty time left. But a bit risky when you've got only two seconds left.

Haha, GEOFFREY CHAUCER. I was crying with laughter when he randomly shouted that
![]() Shaun's still my favourite chaser - rarely a dull final chase with him! |

They should make that a running gag with the Chasers, every time the answer's Geoffrey Chaucer they have to shout it out.

Did anyone see the edition on Challenge last night? Was also Shaun and must have been a few years old, as one of the Final Chase questions was about Jimmy Saville.
Single contestant, playing for £25,000, got 19. Shaun caught them with 14 seconds to spare, but it was like watching a completely different chaser to the one that now struggles to catch 13 or 14. All his answers were quick and definite. No pauses, lip-smacking or looking around. Another vote here for the Mike Tyson answer being very odd. It was answered as if he had about 30 seconds on the clock. I wonder if they had to reshoot his answers for some reason ? |

But surely that's the whole point of the alternative answers being like that. I was the same as you, I had know idea of the answer, but as soon as I saw them I knew it had to be Random House, because I'd heard of it, and the other two were obviously made up versions of that using a similar word.
So the question's basically testing if you had heard of Random House and, if you had, could correctly deduce it had to be the answer. If the other two were genuine alternative answers then knowing that Random House existed would be of no help and people would just be guessing, since hardly anybody will know the answer. Having said that, there are many questions where the answer is of the "if this isn't right, I've no idea of the answer" type. |
