Lady Garden, in the House of Lords? I ruled that one out straight away as the comedy, slightly rude answer but not even a smirk from Bradley. He's obviously got over his immature Fanny Schmelling phase.

It's the one failing of The Chase that when you get a team like today's then the show is basically over by the third ad break.

It's not necessarily about brightness - often more about having lived long enough to gain lots of trivial knowledge. I had no general knowledge at that age - now I've got quite a bit.

You're obviously not a regular viewer then because there's been lots, just as bad as her, recently.

Yes it's an easy question but my point was you still have to think about it, unlike say, "What's a quarter of eighty" where the answer is almost automatic.

Try asking people, "Quickly, what do you have to add to 37 to get 100?" I think you might be surprised at the number of people who will struggle with that. They'll probably get the answer but they won't get it instantly, it might take a couple of seconds. Or longer. The young lad who was on yesterday got it right away.

I think mental arithmetic standards are in decline. Well, they are in decline. You can see this if you go to the supermarket. Old style shopkeepers will still count the change out onto your hand: "Four thirty, fifty, five and five is ten." People knew numbers. Now I think they know them much less and rely on calculators to work out relatively simple sums. Nowadays the till tells the cashier how much change to give you and they just count it out themselves and plonk it into your hand in one go. They can't count it on to your hand because they don't know how. You have to check it yourself to see if it's right.

The point about these sort of players is if they have poor general knowledge, why did they apply to go on The Chase? Some of the questions are pretty tough. They must have watched it before. They'll surely have seen the sort of things that get asked. Geography, History, Current Affairs, Literature, Science, plus sport and pop culture and so on. If you don't know much about all that stuff, the chances are you're going to seriously struggle - and not be much help to the team in trying to beat the chaser.

The Chase would be a lot less entertaining if it was only serious quizzers that got on it.. It has to be mixed ability. That's part of its appeal. But sometimes they get people on and you just think, "Had they ever even watched it before they filled in the application form?"

Schmeller.

I went for Lady Vine, as I thought it could be Barbara Vine, but she was just a pen name for Ruth Rendell, who was "only" a CBE (and I reckoned she'd passed away recently enough that it might have been post-recording), but apart from those minor details, a perfect answer.

Mark has commented on Twitter that he had to face a lot of good teams in this series. I'm beginning to wonder, as another facepalmingly bad team turned up to play today, meanwhile Paul has had to chase 24+ at least 3 times in recent weeks, IIRC.

Many contestants who have watched the show have poor general knowledge. I think they just want to have a go, for "a laugh" or maybe the chance to win a bit of money. And let's not forget, the producers have decided they would make good contestants - as you say, they don't just want quiz team nerds.

Has anyone seen Mark on 'Sugar Free Farm'?
A group of six 'celebs' living for two weeks on a farm with controlled healthy diets and doing farm and food prep chores.

He's quite self-centred and mostly keeps his cool but gets annoyed when food isn't to his liking. It turns out he's a bit of a plonker.

It's about as difficult as asking what is the third letter of the alphabet.

Yes it's not the best HD, I'm watching on STV and the sound is very low, had to put the volume up a fair bit.

Think they will get about 16 or 17 but Anne will catch them fairly easily.

They only got 10 right.

Poor final chase from the team, they took too long to pass on questions no-one knew.

Don't know if teams are allowed to discuss tactics, but if they are they should choose a nominated 'passer' who will pass any question that is not immediately answered,

Can't see them getting a great score, 12 or 13 tops.
