Martin's a wonderful businessman, no doubt, but I suspect he wasn't in the hospitality industry. For such an expensive property, he's got a crap website. And, unless the site doesn't work on Firefox, there's nothing on the Tariff page. Which is weird.

http://www.halliwellhouse.co.uk/

Even the photo gallery doesn't succeed in making the property look worth £7-£8k a week... though when I've seen the snapshot views on the 4iaB previews, it does look lovely and furnished to a high standard. I don't think he's used a professional photographer or web designer. Stupid mistake.

Still, the prices are on the link below - scroll down to the bottom to get the for 12 / for 8 / etc weekly and daily costs. While you're there, note that the availability calendar is wide open - ie, calendar not updated since last September and apparently no bookings at all during 2016.

https://www.holidaylettings.co.uk/rentals/hale/240443

I know there is a market for big get-togethers for family / friends gatherings - there are sites that specialise in them -
for eg: http://www.thebigdomain.com/united-kingdom
...and Halliwell House may well have its place and be successful in that sort of niche, but it seems such a bad fit with the way 4iaB works. It's a high-quality, large capacity, self-catering holiday home and making it relevant and appealing to a 4iaB audience will take better presentation and marketing skills than Martin has displayed so far. Maybe he needs the help of the Charmed Ones.

Being sooooo judgemental in advance of actually watching the show I think he's got his marketing wrong, his pricing wrong (is Hale, Cheshire a 'destination' town ?) and to offer one night stays in that property is absolutely bonkers. It should be a minimum of 2 night stays or even 3 night stays. I suspect he's got sod all in the way of bookings (still only one TA review and this 4iaB series looks to have been filmed 6-7 months ago at least). I suspect 4iaB is desperation tactics. Wrong show but potentially great publicity.

We will see.

ps: excerpt from the TA review:
We had a arranged to have use of the hottub (for an extra charge) which we all loved. Things such as robes can be provided but they have small additional charges so I would advise to take your own. Also remember to take your slippers as there are cream carpets throughout so you must remove your shoes.

Bits in bold are by me. So you pay £300-400 a night per room and have to pay extra for the hot tub, robes and no free slippers ???”

If he's used a web designer and is happy with that rubbish website he's not as sharp as he thinks. It looks amateurish and the first thing I thought was that it looks like a blog page rather than a site promoting a professional business.

He has a Gmail e-mail address. Not very professional!

Donna certainly gave a lesson in how to react to negative feedback. Well done.

Unlike a few previous contestants, I felt her providing some twiddly bits we her adding a few finishing touches for special guests rather than a cynical attempt to win points. I could of course be wrong but she's changed my initial opinion of her. Will be interesting to see how she behaves now her turn is over.

For special occasions, we have been known to go to a 5 star London hotel, and stay in a suite. The suite comprises a hallway, huge bathroom, huge bedroom and a huge sitting room with terrific views. Included in the price are slippers and dressing gowns; whatever we want for breakfast (served); access to the executive lounge where we can get tea, coffee, soft drinks and savoury snacks 24/7; cakes and pastries in the lounge in the afternoon; hot food, desserts and complimentary wine and beer in the lounge in the evening. Not to mention 24/7 concierge service, 24/7 room service and so on and so on.

We pay about £450 for that. Tell me where the better value is!

Hi Normandie

I went to read that review for myself, it's 2½ years old!
There's a management response but it's poorly written and didn't address
Quote:
“The house is beautiful especially the kitchen and bathrooms (although 2 showers weren't working but there are 5 in total!)”

I think it reads as though they booked per room rather than the whole house as it mentions booking an extra one. It's not clear at all and I agree the website if very amateur and poorly presented. The Tariff page is just blank via the Opera browser too.

He really likes his extra charges doesn't he. Owner Terms include
Quote:
“...utility supplement may apply .use of candles drinks food a small charge to cover cost will apply Late check out charges apply Credit cards accepted 3 percent surcharge”

Hiya Solar - good to see you.

I didn't notice the date of the review. There's something odd about Halliwell House - it'll be interesting to see if we find out how long he's been in business (with the property) or whether he's a new owner.

At that level of property and pricing, you just do not charge for extras - well, unless it's a special event like hiring a marquee or booking balloon rides from the grounds. Otherwise, it's vulgar. You price assuming that all facilities will be used... otherwise you just look mean and penny-pinching and it focusses the guests' minds on prices during their stay when all you want them to be doing once they are there is enjoying the ambiance and facilities.

Being (perhaps unfairly) judgemental again, I think Martin has been in a business where every penny counted and he hasn't made the mental shift to "luxury" experiences where everything should look effortless and inclusive. Guests must sense that the owner values them... and not like the owner is trying to wring every cent out of them.

A friend of mine (who has been in the accommodation business for 25+ years and whom I respect enormously) has a superb property in southwestern France - though it does not cost £5000 a week! She describes her attitude towards guests as showing a generosity of spirit. Yes, you're running a business and you charge based on what you offer, location, etc, but then you want people to feel a bit special and that the owners genuinely care about them as individuals and want to ensure guests are happy and content.

Her properties are fully booked every year mostly by repeat customers a year in advance. You don't achieve this sort of success by charging loads and then applying extra fees for what should be inclusive.

Martin take note.

How can this be classed the same as the other B&B

The female from Hale that was on the last series was also a total, nouveau riche roaster. I'm amazed they haven't been drummed out the area for lowering the tone with their B&Bs.

Not expecting any over payments for this place.

At those rates I'd be expecting breakfast and an evening meal with wine inclusive.

He's sure got plenty of face.

I'll go back and respond to posts later, am agog at this car crash. Everything in the house has a price tag and can be purchased.

'A House Cover Charge' what a load of pretentious pony.
