Yes he was intense and a tad boring with his lectures, but he didn't show any venom or nasty behaviour..... I liked Jade and Diane, but they did come across as the more negative pair....

Its a bloody gameshow and the producers encourage them to bitch about each other (yes ive been told that by people who've entered the show) but jesus your all portraying your businesses, you can give constructive critisism without coming across as a jealous dick. Everyone thinks there business is perfect, but hey whats wrong wth "Loved your place but personally when i go away i loved a fried up breaky, I dont do cereal" say it with a smile on your face they will understand and not get pissed off in the process. Everyones different ........

This weeks was personal when there's really no need, and with tact you can give your opinion quite well without it becoming uncomfortable or bitchy viewing. That would bore people though.... and they'd stop watching, i personally enjoy seeing everyone getting on well making new friends and seeing the great B & Bs out there........ and the bad ones lol

Why, he's a self-taught cook... er... chef, sorry. Entertainingly (as far as I'm concerned) as no one ordered his cooked breakfast (he did offer cooked brekkie at a £12(ish) pp supplement, didn't he?) he got a free ride in criticising everyone else's. Which is a shame.

But it is true that bedroom with 'shard' (as per his website) bathroom prices are excellent value for the area providing you don't mind the sharing - which you'd know about before booking. And the rooms were clean and pleasant; a table and two chairs to make eating comfortable is vital, though.

Ignoring the owners, none of the properties were at all interesting this week. I don't know if the activities were - I ff straight through them.

I would still prefer to stay at Jade's place rather than Matthews. I think she would be a good host and I wouldn't have to eat my breakfast in the bedroom.

yes well i would agree with you there........ breakfast in the bedroom doesn't suit me and Ive stayed in a youth hostel and didn't enjoy it, but each to their own, i appreciate everyone has different opinions but on national tv isn't the way to slate someone. Perhaps I'm just to kind lol but i just think there's no need to try and humiliate someone in public. Have a degree of class, do it with a smile on your face and have abit of tact about you, these people show more than their businesses on tv

Premier Inn is pricey enough £8 but at least you eat all you can and you know what your getting before you go......... Had i paid over £100 for a room id expect a cooked breakfast most definatly to be honest the activities are gettng worse ! id be embarrassed to go on tv with some of the activities they do for their guests

Jade and her mate were awful. She was aggressive throughout the week towards Matthew. He was not nasty and vindictive back towards her. So as far as bully like her is concerned he was an easy target. Anything he did was wrong but everything she did was ok because she said so. He is a bit of a wally though. Describing himself as a chef gave her an easy opportunity to have a go and there are nicer ways of doing it. Jade's way is aggressive and in your face. Jade was also unnecessarily rude by calling his place a hostel. It was also ok for her to underpay but not him. Mind you, I'm not saying it's right but he had probably underpaid because he had had enough of her domineering attitude and put downs all week.

I certainly wouldn't stay anywhere Jade was and I would only stay at Matthew's place if there were private facilities and better arrangements for breakfast. So that's probably ]never.

And if that stupid friend of Jade's thinks she can stay in central London for less than Matthew is charging, then she's deluded. Jade and Diana were a pair of ultra defensive chippy moos.

The other places weren't too bad though!

PMSL that made me laugh as i agreed with most of it, .......only after ive just rewatched "Borrowby Mill" on you tube and went OMG yes i remember that nightmare contestant....... and it reminded me of "it doesnt matter how posh the place is, if the hosts come across badly you just wont give them your money" for me when i go away i go to see the town and want a private bathroom, I'm normally too tipsy and always have a good nights sleep but i do expect a good english breaky in the morning a room is a room,..... its a clean bed and functioning shower & heating for the night, im not paying £100 for nice wall paper ...... personally i think many are over priced for what they offer and they wonder why the chain hotels get the custom - like ive said we are all different

Yes totally, just another stick to beat Matthew with. Their attitude stunk, and the fact they were so nice to the other contestants was just a different way of getting at Matthew. He of course is far from perfect, over-sensitive for sure. All in all one of the worst FIAB for some time, no one has done themselves any favours.

that would cancel out all the honesty and integrity of it all....... hence people would get bored and stop watching. However i think let everyone read their feedback in the payments episode and air it all then but at least honest opinions of the B & Bs would surface for the rest of the week

We stayed in London for £99 per night on a Friday & Saturday in December last year, the price didn't include breakfast though.

It was a Premier Inn in Holborn, very spacious room, comfortable bed and on a quiet street, from memory the cost of breakfast was about £12pp, we walked 5 minutes round the corner to Weatherspoons and paid £15 for 3 of us to have a decent breakfast.

So, a stay in London for less than Matthew charged for his ensuite room is possible.

I would stay at any of this weeks places apart from Matthew's as I wouldn't use a communal bathroom, but to be fair to him, he states on his website that 'breakfast snacks are included' and that three rooms have to share the bathroom.

I look forward to my cooked breakfast when I stay at a B&B, the only time I can recall eating a continental one is when we've stayed at an airport B&B and we've had to leave way before the cooked breakfast is cooked. I also want a good bed, a decent shower which is en suite and a clean room. A welcoming host on the premises is a given too. The Trip Advisor reviews on Matthews 's place aren't all complimentary and he would drive me nuts with all the pontificating about organic food, chemicals and wanting to save the planet.

That was so unpleasant & rude comparing his place to a youth hostel, matthew is a sensitive soul and Jade knew exactly where to kick him where it hurt. Insulting one's business does feel like a personal insult.



I thought the wallpaper in all of the b&bs this week was awful, that alone would have put me off staying. But all this hairs on bed & toilet is beyond a joke, even if they used a sticky roller on the bed sheets and toilet seat, they would still 'mysteriously' be there. <rolls eyes> And the activities are just silly , as has been said on here before, why not show us something of the area?

They were absolutely horrid to those two all week, never missing an opportunity to put him down and get a dig in. even today, she made the asinine comment that Matthew was expecting to be judged on the quality of what he provided for breakfast not what he did actually provide! Err yes - that he did - and his pastries and stuff looked lovely and good quality. I'm sure e cooked breakfast would have been lovely too with free range and organic provisions had any of them chosen to take it, as presumably that would have been taken in the restaurant.

Why they chose to underpay £30 for what was undeniably a lovely en suite room, when those who had to use the shared facilies only underpaid by £10 specifically for the shared bathroom, is unbelievable - it was just petty and spiteful and totally unjustified.

Matthew came across as a well meaning bit of a wally, who provides value for money accommodation in an expensive area, and uses good quality freshly prepared food. Guests staying at his place are made aware of the shared facilities and extra charge for a cooked breakfast when booking - and as he says, they have plenty of customers. Unlike Jade and her sidekick, he never got nasty or personal, or put her down at every opportunity.

I'd rather stay in one of the Partridge's shared facilities rooms than at Jade's place because I thought that her attitude stank, and her place wasn't all that either. She's one of those who like dishing out nasty comments and being bloody rude under the guise of "plain speaking", and the way she had a go at Matthew for underpaying the first place because he didn't sleep well was totally uncalled for, and she was spooling for a fight with him all the way through the process!

I loved the way he neatly got her back by underpaying at the end - and at least his reasons for underpaying her were more valid than hers for underpaying him - and she didn't like a taste of her own medicine! She didn't like the criticism she got, but was more than happy to dish it out!

Whilst I thought the winners deserved it - the husband was nasty with what he said about the others as well, and was another one who couldn't take criticism!

Agree 100% with all you've written & nicely summed up.

I do still watch it, but with more dread than I used to as the programme now seems to be more than ever focussed on the potential clash of personalities rather than an objective view of the B&B's.

I suppose it makes for good telly in the programme makers view, but it's a less than satisfactory advert for the hospitality trade in the UK & if this lot are anything to go by it's no wonder people choose to go abroad.

The pathetic over-scruitinisation of rooms did give me an idea though for a sister show called 'DNA In a Bed', where four sets of B&B owners compete to find out how squalid their place is using pubic hairs, dust and 'human waste' as evidence found in each others' establishments.

Judged by a newly elected Crime Commissioner, forensics and swabs are taken for investigation and the winners are the owners with the most amount of bacteria found in their B&B, the prize being a visit from Rentokil and a lifetime supply of Jeyes Fluid...

Probably no less daft than it's been lately...

I suppose this is just another example about how we're all different and have different expectations. I would also have hated the air freshener and would have wondering what they were trying to cover up. If the place is clean it doesn't need to have the air filled with toxic chemicals.

I agree and in fact I don't think she understood what he was getting at anyway when he was talking about organic food, etc. He wasn't - or didn't seem to be in the edited version we saw - talking about healthy food (after all he ate meat and smoked) but rather the advantages to the planet of eating locally grown, organic food.

Whilst he loves watching FIAB my husband reckons it reinforces why he never wants to stay in a B&B cos the majority of the owners and weird and not particularly nice people. You are really chancing your arm on getting a decent one, The really nice, genuine, people stick out a mile on this show because they are so few and far between.

But he doesn't have any problem using tobacco that has been flown halfway around the world
