Her story was a little inconsistent too. On the first day she put it down to not wanting to sleep where someone else's head has been and ewww, etc. Which doesn't wash as she runs a B&B so giving guests a pillow that's been slept on previously is normal I would think, unless she wants us to think it's SO unhygienic that she gives each guests a new pillow. Pretty unlikely. When asked about it the next time she mentioned asthma or allergies. Sounds like she was trying to cover for her nonsensical first story, or as you say, possibly attention seeking.
I often bring a neck roll pillow when I travel as it helps me feel more comfortable when I sleep. It's nothing to do with hygiene though, I suspect that's not uncommon, depends on how much spare room you have in your luggage as well.
