Heads up for anyone who longs for a programme that's closer to what most of us want to see from 4inaB.
I'm watching a BBC1 series now on catch up. Series 2 of Home Away from Home. Two homeowners swap anonymously and go to live in each others' places for a staycation. They try local activities and eat out and rate the area etc. So we get to nose around and we get to see the locations too. They see a video message at the end and find out who stayed at their home. Not seen any snideyness or silliness as yet. |

£5 underpayment due to taps (which apparently work well enough), ridiculous.

It's probably just a bill for the dust sheet

It's all a set up by the production team, right

I don't care who gets the "officialy" wins. Darren and James are the real winners
![]() Quote:
I do wish that on the judgement day they would show the hosts video/ photographic evidence of what they are complaining about. Now THAT would be spectacular to watch.
![]() Quote:
I still think if Ray has given all the rooms a proper clean then i would probably stay there at £55 , the decor seemed fine for a fairly cheap B&B
Mind you I hated the green & brown (sh*t & diarrhoea ) colour scheme in Lorna's B&B.Quote:
Well done Daren and James you where worth winners!
*I might have blocked out some of the show... |

I was going to say the same. I'd have given him a bill for my night's stay in that room and paid for breakfast separately.
I wouldn't have paid for a room where the bed was quite so spectacularly bad.Quote:
Ray apparently thinks his pine furniture is 'funky'

I wonder if Ray knows what his staff are up to, it might be the staff being lazy and he doesnt check
I think that the standard of cleaning / decor / mattress sizing at Ray's is something he simply didn't grasp as important or relevant prior to it being brought to his attention on the show. Quote:

The French version of 4iaB has Judgement Day in two parts (in the same 60 minute show) where the 4 couples are first shown in separate rooms and given a tablet on which they see the other couples finding fault on camera - the same as we viewers have during the week. So Ray would have seen the couples finding dirt, the appalling state of the mattress and the stuffing in the gap, the crayon scribbles on the walls, etc. It can be very funny to see the outrage on someone's face when they realise that the negative statements they'd disputed on the comments sheets are actually backed up with filmed evidence. ![]() Then having seen the evidence, all couples come together to get the payments and to challenge each other over their comments / payments. It can get fiery. Quote:
My feeling this week is that Production insisted on fault finding no matter how ridiculous.
Was Ray's percentage the lowest we've ever seen on the show? That guy a few series ago with the wet distemper in his shower cubicles would probably have scored lower... but of course he didn't finish his week. |

![]() I wouldn't have paid for a room where the bed was quite so spectacularly bad.Perhaps he's using one of the other definitions of 'funky'... (btw, nice to 'see' you SS... I read elsewhere that "Q" has news so I must catch up with you in a more frilly place... ) Except that... an owner is utterly unprofessional (and/or stupid) if s/he doesn't go over each room in an CSI stylee prior to their livelihood appearing on national tv... I think that the standard of cleaning / decor / mattress sizing at Ray's is something he simply didn't grasp as important or relevant prior to it being brought to his attention on the show. ............ It is. The French version of 4iaB has Judgement Day in two parts (in the same 60 minute show) where the 4 couples are first shown in separate rooms and given a tablet on which they see the other couples finding fault on camera - the same as we viewers have during the week. It can get fiery. But as we have often said, participants can't be forced to underpay. Was Ray's percentage the lowest we've ever seen on the show? That guy a few series ago with the wet distemper in his shower cubicles would probably have scored lower... but of course he didn't finish his week. I suppose being based in Redditch and charging 55.00 for a double room with bed & breakfast they get complacent perhaps. I dont think he understands HOTELIERS role.. I dont think he has actually RUN a hotel/B&B before. OK my friend has a lovely house she has as a B&B. She works hard at it, and has a chamber maid well two actually...1.5 to be precise. She has had a real wake up call lately, because of personal circumstances she has had to rely on them to do the job and not been checking, as she naturally assumed they would do it right. 3 bad reviews on TripAdvisor woke her up with a bang. I sent her a check list for rooms after they had been finished (its one i kept from my housekeeping days). She was shocked at how much she hadnt been doing. Now she is not a young women, and is quite savvy, so if she can fail spectacularly its not surprising Ray did as well. HER error was simply relying on the staff she was paying to do the job properly, but the lesson is YOU ALWAYS CHECK.... I just hope this show has made him SIT up and realise what is important and that he will get the rooms sorted out. I actually thought what he said to Mrs & Mr Grumpy about the state of their room when they stayed with him was fine. He APOLOGISED, he said he was sorry etc. It took the wind out of the sails of Mr Grumpy but he still had to have his say. OK Ray learn by it. His rooms were not that bad that a good clean and some maintenance wouldnt sort out. Fair enough. As to Rays underpayments and comments. I think personally a lot of it was lost in translation. The boys room. I think he was trying to say with the area of the bed being really modern the pine furniture didnt seem to match. Now shoot me but I have to agree with him on that. I thought the Pine furniture and knaff mirror was horrible. BUT thats just my personal PREFERENCE. It might not have come over well with him, as most people said they couldnt understand what he was saying even though he had pine in his place it wasnt OUT OF PLACE, he felt in the boys room it was. As to underpayment and his comment about price of B&B over a pub, I actually agree with him on that too. I would NEVER pay that amount even in the New Forest to sleep over a pub. No way. I did it once in Chipping Sodbury and we never slept. Perhaps he used his laptop and WIFI to check prices. You could stay at The Bell Inn Hotel, which has great reviews right on the Forest from £69 for a single with breakfast, and double for £89 and a nicer place IMHO. http://www.laterooms.com/en/hotel-re...lyndhurst.aspx HOWEVER, I liked the boys place and for me they should have won they were honest and balanced throughout ALTHOUGH they did say they slept well at Rays place and I dont think i heard them say in the room it was DIRTY. As to the underpayment of £5.00 by Ray at Donnas that was fair, when you matched their stupid underpayment for normal taps lol...... I was more upset that Swallow won. I thought their place horrible. I agree with Ray about the room he was in, it looked manky and like he said white linen makes it look clean (yeh I know... he obviously knows what he likes he just needs to put it into practice lol)...... but that room was not worth the money. Mrs & Mr Grumpy actually said they put him in the BEST ROOM, OMG if that was the best room.......... Even the bedspread looked old and tired. It reminded me of the room my MIL had in her old peoples home. So ok he made some odd statements BUT some of them i think were taken out of context. He apologised for the bacon, and the bedroom, he didnt argue about it being all wrong, he took it and said thank you for the money. BUT the worse underpayment to me for the programme was Donnas place. To underpay Donnas place by 20.00 because of Mrs & Mr Grumpy not sleeping was spectacular. If they had taken off 5.00, Donna would have won I think. They knew that Donnas place was the one to beat, and they found a chink in her armour the road. NOW Donna who didnt win on camera clearly said they were the TRUE WINNERS because they didnt game player, well now that is DELUSIONAL lol. Anyway i hope Ray learns by this and doesnt give up. So whats next week, I wonder who will be on the hit list for worse person/people... I wonder what gate we will get..... SausageGate, MattressGate, SheetGate lol........ |

I like Darren and James and thought their place was fine but I do wonder how much input they had in pricing, decorating, furnishing and facilities. It may have all been done by the owners rather than the managers.

But surely whether you sleep or not is fundemental to your stay at a B&B? I know there's little they can do (although triple glazing and/or heavy drapes will do a lot), but if you have to resort to handing out earplugs then that should be reflected in the price. Of course we don't know what a comparable place off the road in the area charges so it is difficult, but I wouldn't be happy if I got very little sleep either.
Personally I can't stand wearing earplugs and usually find them more likely to keep me awake than any noise .I totally understand what you mean though, BUT i thought 20.00 over the top when didnt they take the same off for Rays place.... Shrike I found this hotel. the Lion Hotel its right on the main road, and i checked every review not one person complained about the noise of traffic. The only person who mentioned noise was someone in the back rooms something to do with Tapas bar.... So it shows that really this road is not the sort you will get thundering traffic through at 4am lol. http://www.laterooms.com/en/hotel-re...hrewsbury.aspx |

As to input I doubt they had any input in pricing. Makes you wonder if its had a new refurbishment why there would be holes in the sheets lol. |

Montville Hotel web site
This has been updated since I saw it last. It even has virtual tours now on all the rooms and things have changed in bedrooms. There is a room (6) with four poster bed etc, all rooms look smart and different.
They offer other things at the Hotel, and also massage. I took the virtual tour. Some of the camera work is a bit dark, but you get the idea. so perhaps if they go on the show they get paid and this enabled him to update his rooms or something? OR he did listen to the criticism. http://www.montvillehotel.co.uk/virtual-tours.html |

Donna Miles is on Facebook 4inbed page (fan page), she said the under price of 5.00 was to do with the taps and the HOLES IN THE SHEETS, which was edited apparently.
As to input I doubt they had any input in pricing. Makes you wonder if its had a new refurbishment why there would be holes in the sheets lol.

Next week:
Monday The contest begins at Sue Hodds and Louise Montgomery's Lilly's Pad in Keelby, Lincolnshire, where there are mixed reactions to the themed teddy bears. http://lillystearoom.co.uk/ http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_R...e_England.html https://fbcdn-photos-c-a.akamaihd.ne...b0d4a77c07b819 https://www.facebook.com/Decorum-at-...3301808301662/ Tuesday The second day of the competition is at The Clifton in South Shields, where hospitality experts Scott and Liz Carlucci extend a warm welcome. Guests Sue and Louise are expecting big things, but are quickly disappointed by their room and its view of roadworks. www.theclifton.co.uk/ http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_R...r_England.html http://www.shieldsgazette.com/lifest...nner-1-7461406 https://www.facebook.com/Clifton.hotel.SS Wednesday The contestants travel to Melody House in Great Ryburgh, Norfolk for the third day of the competition, where Sue and Louise are less than impressed upon arrival. Owner and entrepreneur Audrey Buxton reveals her musical background and invites her guests to take part in a sing-along, and Gordon and Sharon question their host over dinner. http://melodyhousebedandbreakfast.co.uk/ http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_R...a_England.html https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...3569808&type=3 Thursday The final stay of the week is at the Castle Hotel in Eynsford, Kent, where landlords Gordon and Sharon Thompson aim to be the life and soul of the party, with a hovercraft race bringing a surprise contender to the fore. However, when to comes to the scoring, there's a huge difference of opinion from the guests - and the hosts are determined to find out why. http://wp.castlehotelkent.com/ http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_R...t_England.html Friday The B&B owners meet for the last time to find out what they've been paid and to settle some scores. Sue and Louise want Audrey to explain her comments on their cabling, while Scott and Liz tackle Sue and Louise's cleanliness issues at The Clifton. With things close to breaking-point, the competition winners are finally announced. |

![]() I tell you what when you actually really looking at the room he was in at Swallow its HORRIBLE. NOTHING matches, the candlewick bedspread is dire, and the books on the bookshelf untidy, the curtains dont match, its horrible actually when you really study the photos and this women says she is a designer. Jeez. The ceiling lamp shade doesnt match. I wouldnt be happy staying in this room, and they said it was their BEST ROOM. The Silvertons rooms were the best for me. |

Proportionally to the asking price even £20 would've been far more an underpayment than they gave in Shrewsbury. |

They're having a laugh. And the traffic DID look like the M25, judging by what was shown on TV. The sash windows were single-glazed. Earplugs??? Normal hoteliers would provide double/triple glazing at those prices. |
