I've just remembered that, in the earlier series of the show, they usually had a task with shopping channels, and the candidates selling on air. They've not happened the past few series, however, I think they stopped around the time Karren joined or around the time they changed the prize. Anyone know why?

I don't know why - maybe the shopping channel decided to stop allowing it. It got them publicity, but also lost them a load of money. It's only worth their while doing it if the candidates do a good job - they did the first time with Miriam and James, but not so much after that.

But actually, they didn't do it that much even when they were doing it. They only did it three times - in Series 1, 3 and 5.

I also remember the series which Simon won. And there was a hilarious moment on a shopping channel when one of the candidates was demonstrating how to screw a leg onto a contraption, but it came across as an unintentional comedy moment. It must go down as one of the classic Apprentice clips.
It's probably on Youtube.

It is! I watch it every so often.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UppWmAE5GKU

As you will see it is actually Simon that provides this comedy moment.

I wish they still did these tasks, the episodes in both series 1 and series 3 were classic.

The wolf jacket and trampoline moments were 2 of the funniest moments in apprentice history

I would be surprised if Ideal World put a stop to these tasks. The candidates may have sucked at selling but it is great publicity for their channel. I actually started watching those channels after that episode just for the entertainment value, didn't buy anything though

I guess they're just trying to keep the Apprentice up to date, shopping channels being a bit outdated.

No so much. There's scores of them on satellite. Ideal World's presenting team has gone downhill so you'd think they'd welcome the apprentice for a bit of publicity.

I've often wondered why they haven't been brought back now the prize has changed to a business partner, surely the art of selling yourself and a product is better suited to these people than to people just wanting a job with LAS?

Then again given the past results, would LAS take them seriously as a business partner anymore if they had a go on a kiddy stringless guitar toy thingy, or rode around in a wheelchair?

The thing is though, were those adverts by Apprentice candidates ever actually broadcast by the respective shopping channel when they were made?
People who sometimes watch those channels say that they never saw Apprentice candidates doing adverts. What's more, wouldn't it be a bit of a spoiler of what's to come on a forthcoming series of The Apprentice?

Even when a new series of The Apprentice starts and the list of candidates with their photos appear in online media publications, not one article mentions that any of the candidates have previously been seen on adverts for a shopping channel.

If any ads and demos were shown it would have been in one selling session only. So unless you watched 24/7 you could easily miss it. They were selling real products so the orders could easily have been real. If the segment wasn't announced as being to do with The Apprentice there would be no obvious connection. Even if you guessed it was, it's not much of a spoiler, more of an extended trailer, months before broadcast.

I lean towards the "real sales but not many noticed it" theory. Rather like when they do market trading. But if it was all fake then that would be a very good reason why it's no longer done.

It is a pure selling task and there's enough selling activity going on every week as it is. Do we really need any more?

I don't think it is a pure selling task, half the battle was selecting the right product and knowing your audience.

They were actually broadcast - the tasks were won on how many units of those items were sold whilst they were on air.

In the Series 3 one, it was revealed in the boardroom that Simon and Kristina had had complaints made against them by Ideal World's viewers (not sure if they were aware that it was The Apprentice, they might well just have been watching and thought, 'Who's this idiot?')

It's still mainly the selling though. You can pick a bad product and sell it well and vice versa. People buy all sorts of crap they don't need on those channels.

Well, I mean if you think about Series 1 - Miriam's team lost because the boys had picked all the wrong products, and on the other team Saira had done a really good job of making sure she and James got all the right things. Miriam was a great presenter, but you can only sell what you're given.

(Of course, beyond Series 1, they changed the rules so that everyone had a turn at both producing and presenting, so that situation didn't happen again.)
