I'm not as such defending them but I'm a sensible chap and don't panic, don't throw my toys out of the pram.
I can't believe the amount of panic regarding TT shown here by some members. Quote:
The real problem is that customers' details weren't encrypted. As that's what people are complaining about, presumably other big companies would have customers' details encrypted.

Talktalk were cheap and .... uncheerful. They are moving away from the discount model and are pushing more services to compete with BT and Sky. So far the only difference in their new strategy is the price going up!

My experience with TT is the worse I've ever have! Wouldn't recommend to my worse enemy! Still owe me £50!
I could go into detail but don't want to wear my fingers out & waste valuable skin... |

For months, Talktalk has filled my inbox with offensive emails - do I want a Russian prostitute, do I want a Brazilian prostitute, Gambling, sham insurance claims etc - about 50 every few hours. Now, as well as that, they are re-sending my deleted emails from months ago, 600 at last count. I can't afford to lose money by finishing my contract early. I have a Gmail account and redirected my Talktalk emails to there, thinking they would be spam filtered, but the whole lot go on there so I now have double the annoyance. I will be so pleased when my contract ends and I can find a respectable provider.

There is a spam filter on TalkTalks email accounts but you have to go to your account to enable it. There are other tools there as well. If this was a major problem then it would be in all the papers. I suspect some of you have foolishly given out your addresses to unreliable sites. Not that I would expect you to admit to that.

What papers would be interested in that aspect? Nobody could prove where the spam was coming from, and like you, it's easy to shift the blame to the receiver of said junk mail.
It's a bit different when you're getting calls from people pretending to be TalkTalk and giving your account number as proof, to then try and con you out of money. That's very much a big problem as it could catch people unawares. What's more, as I have had those calls, I absolutely know they're down to TalkTalk! Clearly scammers want personal information on as many people as possible, so all companies are at risk. Many people are wiser to scams these days, but there are always says go trick even them. |

Well you can see I started this thread back in October 2015. The spam problem has got worse. I believe TalkTalk have no intention of resolving this issue. I expect it boils down to cash. If you don't believe me take a look at the many, many complaints on TalkTalk's own forum.
When my contract runs out I intend to swap provider. Want hundreds and thousands of spam emails? Join TalkTalk! |

You would have to be crazy to be with TalkTalk, given the amount of negative press they receive. Broadband companies in general are of very poor quality in the UK as it is. The standards at TalkTalk must be rock bottom.

Don't even get me starting on Talk talk
I was with them a few years ago I knew very well their router was playing up Rang their useless customer service somewhere in India, Eventually got them to send an engineer out who was worse then useless couldn't find any problems, there obviously was the broadband was slow when it did work which wasn't very often... They then tried to charge me £50 for the so called engineer, I refused to pay and demanded a new router, once I got the router it worked for a month or 2 then had the same problem, By this time I was out of contract with them so changed to sky and never looked back... |

Read today that they lost over 100,000 customers attributed to the scandal last year. BT and Sky were the two key beneficiaries.

We have Talk Talk at work and have had no problems....myself at home I have had EE & BT again no real problems and any I did have were quickly sorted...the only complaint that I would make is about annual price rises, but all companies do that. |

I had a great service for years, although once they stopped manning the forums and let customers take over the role (without any customer service skills, nor the power to do anything) it got frustrating.
Being able to request profile changes to improve speeds was great. It was like having a hotline to someone at the local exchange. Without that, I found that I was getting slower speeds and other issues, right up to when the exchange locked me on to G.dmt. But by and large everything was fine until; a) They wanted me to trial a new app for tablets to watch TV. During that time, they decided to give me some more channels for free to be able to properly test it, and then kept charging me after the trial ended. It was clearly a mistake, and I'd never actually requested these channels be added (i.e. it wasn't me saying 'Give me the channels free for 3 months and it's up to me to cancel before paying automatically'). Nobody on the forum helped and I never got anywhere with customer services. All I got told was 'Well, you should have checked and cancelled - it's your fault' from TalkTalk fanboys. b) When I got a call from someone pretending to be from TalkTalk and quoting my address and account number, then saying my router was infected etc - I realised that my details had been leaked. I contacted TT who quickly admitted there had been a problem and directed me to a FAQ on its site. Why the **** had it not warned me before. I knew it was a scam straight away, obviously. A variation of the Microsoft virus calls, but many people must have believed these were genuine because of personal details being given that people would assume nobody else could know. To me that was gross negligence. Once the second (or third) hack happened, I decided to leave to make a stand. It was about more than just the service, and sometimes you need to vote with your wallet - as did 99,000 - 101,000 people depending on which report you believe (let's say 100,000 to make it easy). I hope that will have prompted TT to start doing things properly from now on, for the benefit of those who stayed. Yet I know my details won't have been erased. I'm still at risk of calls/spam email now as I was with them. FWIW, I moved to EE Broadband and am paying £1 a month for a year, on top of £165 up front for a year line rental. (I could have paid it monthly, but I paid up front on TT too as you get a good discount). My service is actually better. I'm back on ADSL2 and fastpath, so actually get faster speeds than I did before. Speeds I could have had on TT if they were still as helpful as they used to be. So that's my story. In a nutshell for the TL;DR brigade - there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the TT service, but I was not (and still am not) happy with their management, nor the way they treated customers and tried to sweep all the issues under the carpet. I'll always be wondering if there's something else going on right now that they're keeping from us until they have no choice but to admit to. |
