As conceited as Richard is, I think A) He's a nice guy and B) he's pretty good for this show, I thought Joe was getting in his face, eyeballing him and trying to intimidate him and it wasn't working.

Joe strikes me as a plank, think he's a ladies man but ponces around with his spiv moustache and speaking in an affected 'hard-man' voice.

I'm on Richard's side so far.

I would expand it out to David and Joseph, and yeah I agree. Richard seems self-important and slippery, but he's delivered more than any other man over the first three tasks (other than maybe Gary), and they were both patently waiting for him to slip up so they could over-react ridiculously.

Gary!? He's done nothing so far except buy that stupid toy boat that shouldn't have been allowed.

I don't think Richard really gets on with any of his team mates, to be honest. But that doesn't matter, because he's a solid worker. I rather like him.

Nobody other than those who were apparently deeply personally traumatised over that guff over the paper skeleton last year cares a fig that Gary bought an inflatable boat for a kid rather than an inflatable boat for an adult. He was also the one pushing hardest for attention to be paid to margins in Task 1. It involves filling in the gaps a little but that's strong contributions in two tasks, in this case making up a huge proportion of the margin of victory over the women.

I think Richard's alright really. The team don't seem to like him, but early in that task I thought he was bringing up important and valid points.
I thought Joseph was just an arse who wanted to be alpha male and at every opportunity tried to undermine Richard by taking petty potshots at him.

I think that sums him up nicely. Spiv moustache, cheap suit. Del boy used to have a mate who looked similar. I don't much care for Richard but he's streets ahead of Joe, who looks completely out of his depth.

Richard does come off as being pretty smug, which I'm sure hasn't been endearing the other candidates to him – he seemed to take sole credit for the shampoo task win for instance, which wasn't really fair on the rest of the team. I think his hubris might be his downfall.

On the other hand, Joseph and some of the other guys (particularly Mergim) come across as being pretty thick, whereas Richard seems at least fairly eloquent, despite the tendency to resort to corporate talk waffle that he was warned about at the beginning.

On You're Fired it showed him trying to flirt with a woman when trying to buy an item from her. But he just looked like a dick.

Richard is an odd one . There is something unlikeable about him . Maybe the robotic demeanour ? I'm not sure , BUT , Joseph grinds my gears even more than Richard does . There is something slimy about him . The 1940's matinee idol look doesn't help endear him to me .

Not saying I like Joseph, but I think of the two I would prefer to work with Joseph, just because he at least gets on with the work and doesn't really let his ego get in the way of things to the extent that I could see Richard would, just my two cents.

I think there is a lot of ego in Joseph.

They were correct when they said that Richard is like David Brent from The Office. He sounds like somebody who swallowed a business jargon book and regurgitates it at every opportunity.

The problem is that most of them probably aren't old enough to remember Dad's Army or they'd realise Joseph is a clone of Pvt Walker.
He really should be standing on a street corner with a fag hanging out of his mouth, selling "nylons" to passing women.

It think its massively insulting to brand him a David Brent, because yes, while he spouted a lot of jargon, he was also an incompetent, disliked, work-shy asshole, I don't think Richard is any of those thing. All the guys mocking him will be fired before him, of that I'm confident.

I think Richard is this years dark horse, coming in full of himself and spouting inane rubbish, but secretly a diamond in the rough that becomes more polished over the weeks.

I liked his style in not getting dragged into any disagreement when Joseph tried to make him look like a fool for only getting 30c off the cheese, when it was Joseph that shut down that negotiation (although Joe probably thought Richard was selling backwards).

You're right and I'd only say the comparison is in their mannerisms rather than their abilities.

I suppose a TV show presents a special dilemma for the participants.
If you use all that jargon you ensure that people are aware that you know it but then you also have to ensure you follow it as well as reciting it.

Conversely, if you don't use the jargon, nobody will know if you're just ignorant but lucky or whether you understand it and are clever enough to just use it without making a big fuss.

TBH, I'm not that hung up on the boat thing, it's more that I was surprised that you said Gary had made a strong contribution, as I can't remember anything else he's done over the first three episodes.

I think the girls failing to get the mirror and hence getting fined for it was a major reason why the lost the task, as if I remember right, both teams spent about the same but the girls got about £400 more in fines.
