"She's away on a cruise" and other absentee character explanations
I don't watch HO but I saw the Gloved Hand Killer coverage on here and when I saw that Freddie had seemingly become her latest victim, I wondered how they'd explain his mother's absence from his funeral seeing as Gillan Taylforth is back on EE.
I know this happens alot in soaps due to actors moving on but what's the most realistic excuses that have been used to explain why someone is missing their parent's funeral / sons wedding / daughters murder trial etc? Michelle Fowler is probably the most famous example as she missed every single birth, marriage and death involving her family in the last 20 years. I think she was giving birth when Arthur was buried but after that, the excuses for her missing big family events became increasingly less convincing (Mark's funeral - "She already said her goodbyes"). Peggy missing Pat's funeral was explained with her being away on a cruise but when Stan died, was it explained why Johnny wasn't there? And what about Bianca at Jim's funeral? Did she get a mention considering she's only supposed to be living down the road in Milton Keynes? |

I think Carol said that Bianca was on holiday with the kids and it was too expensive to buy another plane ticket for Jim's funeral. Bianca used to have a bankruptcy storyline and probably didn't have a lot of money on possession whilst on holiday.
Michelle does seem to have a lot of excuses, most recently Sharon/Phil's wedding

Sandy Roscoe is in Canada so they'll just say it is too far to come back. To be honest, i find that no less convincing than her choosing to move to another continent, leaving her 6 sons, all of whom were imploding in different ways on their own in the first place.
Some people don't actually see funerals as important, at least not important enough to spends hundreds (or even thousands) of pounds on travelling home for. I have relatives in America who haven't returned for family funerals, usually with the closest person to the deceased saying something like "it's okay, they knew you loved them, you can't actually do anything for them now" whereas other will move heaven and earth to attend. So, i don't actually find it that jarring when people don't return. Re Jonny, we were told that he and Stan had a long talk nefore he ledt and Stan told him to live his life and not return when he got worse or died. |

When Michelle Fowler missed both parents funerals that was rather odd. When its a direct relative like mother, father, son, daughter those lame excuses do seem unrealistic but I get why not all actors can return.

CS: Kevin Webster looking after his dad in Germany for what seemed like an eternity, EE Ronnie's coma that just happened to coincide with the panto season, CS Steve getting over-refreshed rather too early and missing Lloyd's leaving party...

Pauline and Marks were much harder to believe, but as I say, some people don't view finerals as that important - they just believe having been there during life is more important and showing respect after they've gone and "won't know". |
