Fiona Apple's music is not guitar based. It's primarily based around piano. At her concerts, she primarily plays piano not guitar. Her sound has nothing to do with the mainstream guitar sound of the 90's when she started which was leaning more towards grunge/alternative rock sound, as seen in Alanis Morrisette.
Fiona's music is much more experimental and mainstream than Adele. Listen to her last album the Idler's Wheel which has a lot of experimental tracks.
She has nothing in common with Joni Mitchell or Carole King musically; the only thing they have in common is they are women.
I find it odd and almost sexist how some people seem to think women playing instruments and writing their own songs is a genre of itself and lump all female singer songwriters together when they have nothing in common.
If there's one female artist of the time she does have something in common it would be Tori Amos who has some melodic elements but is also very personal and eccentric in some of her songs and is based around piano. But neither her or Tori were part of some kind of mainstream sound but really followed their own path.
the alternative sound was the mainstream sound in the usa in the 90's, she has much in common with joni mitchell and carols king as they are all singer songwriters playing the sounds of the time and as for her current experimental sound its not very experimental if it sounds like tori amos circa 1994, i do like her though, no ones is claiming adele is particularly experimental on here but neither is fiona apple

What's the alternative sound of the 1990's? When I hear that word I think primarily of guitar bands who were played on radio a lot during the 1990's mostly inspired by Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins. Fiona Apple as I said does not base her music around guitars and thus has nothing in common with the alternative music that was big on the radio in the 1990's.

I don't understand when you say she has something in common with Joni Mitchell and Carol King because they are singer/songwriters. Their music is nothing alike. Why do you only compare her to female writers? Why not male singer/songwriters based around piano like Elton John or Billy Joel?

I did not say that her current sound is like Tori Amos. I said of all the female singer/songwriters she is more similiar to Tori since she is based around the piano not acoustic guitars and writes very personal confessional lyrics.. Fiona Apple is far more experimental and less mainstream than Adele.
Fiona Apple never followed any trend in music of the time, she always did her own thing. She is only lumped in with "alternative music" or mainstream music of the time because she is a female singer/songwriter. I really don't think you've heard any of her album is you think her music is based around guitar or sounds like Joni Mitchell.

Posted this in the album thread but it's worth a read for info on the Max Martin collaboration and what Adele actually does in the songwriting process - the majority it seems.

Great article!! So glad she's still curses!
Interesting she liked Taylor Swifts Trouble and that led her to Max Martin. That and Ryan Tedder. She'd never heard of Max Martin before. Classic!
From the article, that songs gonna be a departure from her usual sound. And since I love the Weeknd, I'm looking forward to it.
Can't wait to hear I Miss You. Paul + Adele + sexy time? Yup. Sounds good.

I don't mind Fiona Apple but there are some similarities with Joni Mitchell who has really always been very experimental and jazz influenced as well as folk oriented. And her lyrics are often personal and confessional. I'm thinking 'Hissing of Summer Lawns', Hejira', 'Mingus' from the 70s. The piano/guitar thing is essentially irrelevant.

she has two things in common - shes a singer songwriter and she makes music that sounds like the other music happening at the time, nothing she has produced has been wildly innovative
im saying her current sound is like tori amos - every single night sounds very like tori amos, no one is arguing that she isnt more experimental than adeles 60;s soul sound, but to say far more experimental is stretching it, most of what would be classed as indie sounds similar at the moment and every muscial artist is less mainstream than adele

fiona apple clearly does follow the trends of the time, you can tell this by listening to her albums her early stuff sounds like plenty of other stuff at that time and her newer stuff sounds like much of the stuff around at the moment
