EE: Opinions on Christine?
Honestly, I was a little nervous at the thought of seeing Christine for the first time! I expected to find Les dressed up as a woman to be quite funny but surprisingly it suited him. The makeup team did a good job and Roger's acting seemed better as Christine than it usually is for Les. Credit to Roger for tackling this storyline.
What are your opinions on Christine and how she acted as though she was another person and never met Pam? |

Same here. I thought it was going to be a bit
then and I wouldn't take it seriously but honestly it turned out way way better than I expected it to. Hats off to Roger Sloman for doing that though, it must have taken some balls. It's a very good subject for EE to do but I wonder if there will be any Ofcom complaints tomorrow, probably sadly.

I expected a grotesque parody of a cross dresser, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Christine looks better than Les - which isn't saying much.
![]() Great acting - especially from Birdie. |

Honestly I was expecting it to be awful and unintentionally hilarious. I don't mean the situation is inherently hilarious, of course not, but because the actor is so incredibly poor and over the top. I was also a bit worried what wardrobe/make-up would come up with for Christine. All in all I thought it looked set to be a car crash. But I'll eat my words entirely, despite wobbly acting it was really good. Roger was actually a lot better as Christine than as Les. Fair play to him, it must have been a bit intimidating to act those scenes and he performed much better than usual. There's been some very poor writing in the storyline too, like the dragging the secret out for months with all those incredibly repetitive scenes, but since Pam actually found out I think the writing's been a lot better.
I'm not a fan of Paul at all but I thought the end with him putting his arm around Les/Christine and them both looking sad was very well done and touching. |

I was nervous - bit like Pam! - because they built it up quite a bit. And then I got emotional - how absolutely terrifying it would have been for Les to show this part of himself to Pam, who he's been with for over 40 years. And scary for Pam too, of course. I think it's a genius story and all the kudos to DTC.

I thought I might laugh when I saw Christine for the first time. Either that or I'd be proper creeped out by the whole thing. But I didn't laugh or run out the door screaming! Lol. Les surprisingly makes a good woman. More Christine and Less Les please!

EXCELLENT episode today! I didn't think it would be enjoyable, but this storyline has so far surpassed my expectations. I love how Paul half-hugged Les in the end. And I loved his reaction. My first reaction when he called Les a 'tranny' was that it was rich coming from him as he's gay -- he of all people must understand. Then immediately I backtracked that first reaction and realised that that would actually be a realistic reaction from Paul, regardless of his sexuality.
Pam has also been really great. Her wanting to meet Christine seemed a bit rushed, though I suppose that was rushed more for the viewers than anything. This is a great storyline. I really hope the writers don't put it to the shit. As for Les, Jesus Christ he's brilliant! I haven't enjoyed any of his scenes thus far, but I can tell I'll really enjoy them after today! He's needed something like this. I thought it was a ridiculous idea putting that character in this storyline, but now I'm thinking they couldn't find anyone more suitable! After today's episode he instantly grew on me. Excellent actor. Really bloody excellent.

Probably related to your own inner fears, it must be difficult to deal with for some people. I wish you well in coming to terms with it.
I dont care one way or another about men dressing as women, but a terrible unintentionally hilarious actor doing the cross dressing isn't really going to advance awareness - He's like a pantomime dame |

Roger was brilliant tonight, looked good as Christine and played her just right. There was nothing ott or exaggerated and I think they did a great job of tackling a sensitive storyline. I look forward to seeing where this goes and I hope further down the line Christine becomes a regular in the vic.

Like most above, I was scared that I would unintentionally find the sight of Christine amusing, and maybe even laugh, but like the rest of you I instead found myself fascinated by the storyline, feeling very sympathetic towards both Birdie and Les. I thought it was excellently written and played, and an extremely refreshing and touching storyline for a soap to handle. But yes, there is indeed... always one.

This must be one of the most bizarre storylines ever. I really didnt know what to make of it. Was it Eastenders attempt to do a Corrie style comedy storyline? Was it meant to be serious? It was the must odd thing I have ever seen in a soap. It did make me laugh out loud but I wasn't sure if I was meant to. I would love to see the outtakes. I bet they didnt do that in one take! I wonder what the actor thought when he first saw the script!

He did great, I liked how his persona changed quite a bit as Christine but still looked rather awkward and shifty like Les.
I want to see more of Christine in the future

I was a bit worried just because Roger does over exaggerate his acting at times, especially with facial expressions, but in the end I liked how EastEnders handled this episode. I felt sympathy for Birdie and concerned for Les/Christine too. I'm actually pretty interested in how this develops, will we see Christine meeting anyone else in Walford and how would they react?

He is a dreadful actor. He is a rubbish actor. He is an okay actor. He is a good actor. He is a fabulous actor. He is a dreadful actor repeat ad infinitum.
All the actors on the show are given a character, a visible backstory and an invisible backstory (for future plot line twist and turns). They are all guided and limited by the direction and the requirements of the character. They must all inhabit their characters as best they can given the constraint made upon them. This is a soap drama. It is not meant to be Shakespearean acting to classic roles. Roger had to act Les the character a certain way. When people say he is an awful actor in his portrayal of Les - how else was he supposed to act it without it developing into another character? I thought the acting of Les was great but I didn't like the character itself. Christine looks to be a character I can like. The contrast between the two characters is a sign of how good the acting is as well as what the directors / writers wanted. |
