Huge results for C5's cheap festive themed made for TV movies yesterday. And from next Monday they are slotting an extra one of these in each weekday at 11:20am, which should increase share.


OMG! Absolutely horrendous to see C5 under 1% share in peak. Beaten by E4's Men in Black 2 repeat and other digital channels as well no doubt.

Such a shame because then the assumption is, this content does not work well for our audience. Which may turn out to be the case, but it had no chance opposite such a juggernaut with 16-34s.

Has a mainstream edition of songs of praise ever aired as early as 1.45pm?

Not complaining, seems a sensible place to put it....

When, in 2008 they had to cancel a whole results show because the voting system at the time meant one couple couldn't technically avoid the dance off.

Countryfile is a better lead-in for Strictly than X-Factor is for IACGMOOH

The problem that Viacom have is that there seems to be no natural crossover of audience between C5, which is an older more downmarket audience (sorry Dancc!) and CC and MTV, which are youth skewed.

So this idea of one being a nursery slope for the other doesn't really seem to work. But let's see what happens with Lip Sync Battles. Mel B as host, though, doesn't exactly fill me with hope.

With one getting 4 million more viewers than the other, I should imagine the 18-49 figures are pretty identical (not that we have those in the UK, mind, as we have 16-34s)

I suspect if you were to dig out the demos for Loch Lomond: A Year in the Wild and Ben Fogle's New Lives in the Wild UK, two of C5's most watched programmes in the past week and both strong raters, the demos would not point strongly towards old and downmarket. I think that's very unfair actually.

But you're quite right in that C5 has tended to struggle to attract younger audiences on a consistent basis, and so marrying the C5 brand with Comedy Central and MTV successfully was not going to happen overnight. However, Celebrity Big Brother has shown that young audiences will watch C5 in big numbers, proving content is key. Albeit it did take an established brand.

I think though one aspect you're overlooking and where the best results have been achieved so far is the linkup between milkshake! and Nick Jr. In October 2015, Nick Jr posted an 0.5% share, more than double the 0.2% achieved in the same month last year. That's pretty impressive growth, and it's still going up. Compares favourably with the FTA kids channels.

I think the news was on too late to get more of a boost. It and IAC would probably have benfited from IAC finishing around 10.30pm and going into the news.

Saying all of that. 3.53m is a good figure for ITV News.

They're both effective for each other. Countryfile and Strictly skew old, X Factor and I'm A Celebrity skew young. X Factor used to give a bigger on the day lead-in to IAC.

But one less ad break. That's what matters to ITV, not the slot average.

SCD seems to be picking up and certainly bucking the trend at the moment. I expected it to be hit this year and drop with XF. Who needs Brucie now?

We get them, but in the UK we're obsessed with total numbers.

Dancing With the Stars always wins its slot in the US on total numbers, but cancellation is often talked about.

This is true. One more ad break during IAC will generate more money than a regular ad break during something else shown at that time.

American TV and commercial TV in general's problem is they are obsessed with demos and younger viewers at the expense of everything else. This only started because ABC in America in the 60s had low ratings meaning they couldn't charge much for commercials. So they said they had more younger viewers so advertisers should go with them. Then other channels did the same thing and in the process ditched some very successful shows because they were watched by older viewers.

This is a good series with good dancers left in the competition and people that you don't mind....apart from Jamelia!

Best series in a few years.

Older viewers now are not the older viewers of 20 years ago. They are more tech savvy, have cooler taste in shows than 20 years ago.

Here's an example, which also shows the power of set top boxes. Older viewers are driving the take up of Netflix/Amazon styles services. And more like to use them through a set top box.

"New figures from Decipher’s bi-annual media consumption report Mediabug have shown how growth in usage of subscription VOD services like Netflix and Amazon Prime has been solely due to those over the age of 35.

Mediabug Wave 6, released today, reports that 30% of UK consumers use an SVOD service each month, an increase of +4% in 6 months. However this growth has come from older age groups, with 35-44’s (+7%), 45-54’s (+15%), and 55+ (+8%) age ranges all increasing their usage, whilst 16-24’s dropped 12% over the same period. Both Netflix and Amazon Prime grew their subscriber bases over this period, with Netflix adding +6% to their paid subscribers, and Amazon Prime adding +3%."

Specific findings from Mediabug Wave 6 include:

BBC iPlayer reaches more regular viewers through TV set top boxes than it does through the web and devices combined: iPlayer is accessed monthly by 28% of UK consumers through the web, devices, and Smart TV’s, however a further 29% access it through TV set top boxes.

NOW TV has increased Sky’s monthly VOD reach by just over 3%: 3 in 10 of UK residents who have broadband internet access Sky or Now TV on demand either through a set top box or online through a multitude of devices monthly. There is only a very small overlap in Sky and Now TV’s online VOD audience suggesting that NOW TV has enabled Sky to reach new online VOD customers

Films are the most popular VOD choice: Just over a third of TV VOD viewers accessed films on demand in the last month. According to the BARB Viewing Report, the number of films on live TV securing audiences of over 2.5m has dropped significantly in the last 10 years. The importance of films in terms of TV VOD usage suggests that audiences are still viewing films but increasingly preferring to do so via Video On Demand.
