That is the entire problem. I watched it with a casual viewer who has watched off and on since the revival but never before then - whilst I watched episode 1 in 1963.
I realised what was going on fairly early and found it quite engrossing because I understood that and spotted the clues that led to the conclusion but my friend went off and made a cup of tea and took ages over it as she was by then completely lost not knowing much about the Dr Who backstory.
I had to spend about five minutes at the end explaining everything about the plot to just get told - don't bother I won't be watching next week after that rubbish.
If you have to do that to half the audience there will be only one outcome on viewing figures.
This series has completely aliennated the casual viewer and that's fine if they are happy with a modest live audience. But it will probably effect the Christmas ratings as I suspect a lot of newly acquired fans have drifted away this series.
