I thought the pre recorded bits were fine but the live theatre bits were very cringey

EE is the only soap with a visible online presence with their younger audience, which I think helped make Live Week the event TV it was.”

Netflix is a God send, same with catch-up TV.

I still think it's had a knock on effect on the whole industry, but we are too far gone to repair it. The BBC needs to tell the government to bugger off...or get someone to finish off John Whittingdale.

That's what goes in their favour and the fact there is always a dramatic Christmas always helps them out. Corrie should take Xmas Day off in 2016.

EastEnders had a recovery of sorts last night: 6.31m (30.2%) and 518k (2.8%). The bonus episode tonight hasn't been well advertised, so probably a drop back well below 6m.

Emmerdale: 5.55m (27.5%) and 181k (0.9%)
Holby City: 4.54m (21.2%)

excellent for EastEnders. The catch up is solid too.

Tonight will be horrific - I'd guess 5.1m but then a good 7m on Christmas Eve and aiming toward 8m on the big day. I think NYD could see two solid ratings too!

EE is a tradition at Christmas, we shouldn't forget that too quickly.

Corrie should just take a break until they get their act together.

A strong BBC is good for viewers as the commercial channels have to up their game. A weakened BBC (like it is now) is bad for us as ITV will just put any old tat on.

Thank you for notifying me of the episode tonight! Hadn't seen it advertised anywhere.

EE starting to pick-up a bit, but looking at the share it's still not where it should be. Good BBC3 figure too.

Agreed. It's tradition to make us thankful we're having a better day than many of the Albert Square residents!

Decent-ish for EastEnders but the share could do with being a nudge higher. It was getting 32/33 per cent on Tuesday and Thursday not long back. What is going on with Emmerdale the so-called 'most consistent' soap in the ratings? It was around 6m for a while but is now dropping to 5.5m with not-so-good shares either.

For one I think that ED has gone off the boil for the first time in a while. Too many affair storylines and Kate Oates seems to have run out of ideas just biding her time until the move to Corrie. Secondly ED always rates poorly at Christmas anyway.

Of course the BBC have once again failed to promote EE effectively so tonight's episode may well rate poorly. Serves them right but I think EE will beat Downton on Christmas Day and be top soap.

ED does seem quite low for viewers and share. Was there something of significance on one of the other channels? Or is it in a bit of a lull after their "Who Attacked Robert?" storyline?

Anyone know why CS and ED tend to drop at Christmas but EE tends to rise?

ED and CS face increased competition at Christmas whereas EE is anchored by a strong schedule and storylines come to a head during the Christmas period.

CS/ED never put the effort in at Christmas. It's usually a very low key episode or in Corrie's case overly saccharine.

BBC will have to change it's business model not because any government says so but due to younger generation seeing it as completely outdated. The next decade will be defining for BBC. The government is an easy blame tool particularly Tories but stark reality driven by public is going to hit.

I would say they are quite good ratings for a new drama on here, based on how the rest of the dramas are doing/have done.”

Got all six stacked on my Sky box. Ad free, HD and no auto delete date. Will watch in the New Year.

705k for episode one, across all showings that made top ten, in the 28 day ratings.

Are they not available on your NowTV?

Reasonable numbers for two clashing drama highlights.

...and arguably the biggest show in the world, Game of Thrones, benefits from Government tax breaks, is 90% filmed in the UK, with an almost 100% British cast and crew.

Tax breaks also helped shows like George Gently relocate to England, as the first three series were shot in the cheaper Republic Of Ireland.

Indeed, I am a huge supporter of the BBC but you can make as many comments as you like about Tory Cuts, Whittingdale etc but they are operating in an era where an increasing proportion of people see the license fee as an anachronism.

Oddly, I have a theory that the BBC's core audience is more likely to be Tory voting, and Licence Fee Objectors more likely to be Left-leaning though I can't prove that obviously.

Surely you can't totally disconnect the two things though, the tories and whittingdale have said the Beeb shouldn't compete against commercial TV with the lucrative young audience, hence Grand Prix and BBC3 going. Obviously the Tories close meetings with Rupert Murdoch has nothing to do with any of this.......

They never seem able to promote EE when it's out of its usual slots, they must assume everyone buys a TV mag or uses the EPG, it's bizarre really.

Corrie's biggest ep of the year tends to be in mid-Jan (just before the National TV AWards!). Becky's departure, Hayley's death (and I'd bet the Callum body reveal in 2016) are always on that particular Monday.

There's a couple more linear repeats this week.

Broadcast:

BBC2:
Dads Army Story- 2.7m (12%)

Ch4:
Supervet at Christmas- 2.0m (8.9%)

Ch5:
Michael Buble at Christmas- 1.0m (4.5%)

E4:
Tattoo Fixers- 834,000 (3.8%).
Tripped- 331,000 (1.9%)

Fantastic for Tattoo Fixers return as I imagined. The usual time slot average is 514,000 and last year started with 440,000. Tripped got a series high. Great for The Supervet being slightly higher than usual. About where I expected for Buble.

Great for Tattoo Fixers, it was heavily advertised and a nice alternative.
