Christopher Stevens of the Daily Mail on Death In Paradise
Quote:
“There are no great claims to be made for Death In Paradise. The plots are repetitive and the police are caricatures. Tell me you think it's rubbish and you can't bear to watch, and I'd understand.
But I enjoy it. Those old-fashioned, fiendish whodunnits are absorbing. Humph and his sidekicks are loveable, and their self-important boss, played by the excellent Don Warrington is a joy.
Death In Paradise is the TV equivalent of a rubbishy book on the beach. And at this time of year, that's welcome.”
A neat summary there. DIP is unashamed hokum. It's warm, sunny, relaxing, feel-good entertainment and I'm not surprised hardly any of its fans abandoned it to watch the miserable-looking drama on the other side.
But, yes, the scheduling of Jericho is so obviously an evil plot by ITV to destabilise the BBC: "Look at this, Culture Secretary. We produce this worthy, high-quality period drama (Debate!) and it's drowned at birth by BBC1 behaving like a commercial channel and screening a blatantly populist piece of shallow nonsense (which is an independent production so it doesn't really have to be on the BBC. Nudge-nudge, wink-wink, know what I mean.....)
We think the BBC drama department should be restricted to adaptations of wordy, impossible-to-read Russian novels.... Oh, wait......."
