I think you're right, TXF is a different beast and would certainly benefit from a year off, but ITV wouldn't be able to cope without it. Plus I'd year they've already got a Downton sized hole on Sundays so they really couldn't afford to lose TXF as well or the whole night could be a disaster, as well as Saturdays. Not a good situation. They've become too reliant on one show. Back in X Factor's early years it was a shorter show and just one part of a stronger Saturday night schedule, sitting alongside Saturday Night Takeaway, Millionaire etc. Now they've extended TXF episodes (and extended it to Sundays) and the whole of Saturday night is now basically long episodes of TXF. Great when the show was at its peak, hence why they kept extending it, but now it is on the slide it is a problem. In 2005 The X Factor ran for around 30 hours. Now it is closer to 50. They haven't really extended the number of episodes, but the running time of the episodes has expanded massively and now the show is declining it is a problem as they don't have anything to replace even some of those hours.
On another note entirely, ITV's new science show It's Not Rocket Science starts filming next week. I guess it'll be on in a few weeks time. Quite curious to see how it does as they haven't done anything like this for a while. Here's the description from Applause Store:”
Yes, if TXF were removed from this year, ITV's Saturday and Sunday would collapse. BBC1 would walk it. That is why the need to build up the Autumn schedule and start building new shows around TXF, so when it does go they are not stranded. At the moment its still the central show.
I would begin to shorten TXFs run time and push it to 7pm on both Saturday and Sun. Yes it will be dented by SCD, but better than putting another new show oppsite SCd to get crushed and killed on impact.
Sunday
7pm The X Factor
8pm New: The Durrells
9pm New: The Halycon
10pm ITV News
ITV should be launching new comedies. ventually Benidorm will completely run out of steam, and Birds will end, then they'll be comedy free. Or at least find another comedy drama.
Yes I'm interested to see how this does too. It feels like it could be ITV's version of QI. Also Rachel Riley and Ben Miller are different names to ITV that aren't usually associated with the channel. This is where it would be nice to see the channel using different hosts away from, Schofield, Mulhern, and Kay.
