derek500: what do you make of this fairly remarkable development that a pay channel - with commercials - will carry EastEnders episodes the same day as the BBC?

Are the BBC not shooting themselves in the foot majorly with this?

Dont they have the 90 second news update just before 8.00 thats why the one show starts before 7 ends at 7.27 and so on, thats what i thought anyway

Yes a bit of a bizare move going to a channel not on freeview, surely they could of found a slot on bbc2 daytime (all repeats) anyway or bbc2 weekend daytime all repeats again except for some infrequent live sport.

Surely people will go to iPlayer instead of watching EE with ads? And the fact that EE is on the iPlayer straight after it finishes on BBC1 too.

Yes, now you see it, now you don't, now you see it, now you don't...

From DS :

Death in Paradise was still the killer attraction on Thursday nights for BBC One.

The exotic Kris Marshall crime drama continued with an average overnight audience of 6.09 million (27.3%) at 9pm. However, it dropped nearly 700,000 from last week's return.

Earlier, Dickensian brought in 2.48m (11.7%) at 8pm, followed by Room 101 with 2.71m (13.0%) at 8.30pm. On BBC Two, World's Sneakiest Animals tickled 1.67m (7.9%) at 8pm.

ITV's Birds of a Feather rose by around 800k from last week to 4.68m (22.4%) at 8.30pm (154k/0.7% on +1), while Jericho dipped by 200k to 2.75m (11.4%) at 9pm (301k/1.9%).

On Channel 4, Location, Location, Location is still going strong with 2.25m (10.7%) at 8pm (215k/1.0%), followed by Restoration Man with 1.45m (6.5%) at 9pm (315k/2.0%).

Channel 5's Celebrity Big Brother attracted 2.10m (9.4%) at 9pm (267k/1.7%), as viewers tuned in for more dramatic scenes including an intervention from security in the house.

On Sky1, A League of Their Own entertained 416k (1.9%) at 9pm.

Cheers Ray. I don't get on with the new-look DS, but the 404 error pages are amusing I must admit.

Why didn't they go to iplayer instead of watch it on BBC3?

It's only one programme on a revamped channel, so I doubt people are going to put down their money for just EastEnders.

So there must have been 3 whole minutes of BBC ads between EE and Dickensian. Yikes!”

Is it partly to do with the 90-second News update at just before 8.00. The 8.00 programmes always start at 8.00, so the One Show and whatever is on at 7.30 always start about a couple of minutes early. I know the One Snow normally starts just before my Sky+ box starts recording Emmerdale for instance...?

BOAF doing quite well so far this series, isn't it? I wonder what the premiere episodes ratings were factoring in ITV Hub streams etc - must be well over 5m, nearing 6m even? Not too bad for a sitcom, especially on ITV.

I expect they'll be quite pleased with the ratings.

I made a few points over on the broadcasting thread. I see it as a win win for the BBC, UKTV and the pay platforms.

Twenty odd years ago when tv-am closed, David Frost took his Sunday show to BBC One where it became the forerunner to Andrew Marr's show.

It had an instant repeat at 10am on Sky News with ad breaks, that Frost built into the BBC show.

I also remember Lorraine Kelly 'continuing' her GMTV show on Sky 1.

I've never watched EE (that is the absolute truth), do they allow for showings on ad funded TV, with fades between some scenes?

Yes they start preparing for 7:57pm news update much earlier on in the schedule. Regional news ends at 6:57pm, One Show starts at 6:58pm/6:59pm, Eastenders or other show starts at 7:28pm, then the news update at 7:57pm.

The real BBC plan is to get people to watch the BBC1 broadcast or iPlayer, This pay TV channel will not even get any viewers at all.

....but the BBC is getting same day sales income, then its share of UKTV's profits.

All cash gratefully received to build the new set!!

Those eastenders are kind of dissaponting it shouldn't be falling below 7 million in January just average.

This is the 1st time in so many weeks that ITV is actually up YOY by quite some margin.

2015

Emmerdale 6.35m
The Kyle Files - 2.45m
Emmerdale 6.18m
Birds Of A Feather 4.22m
Bring Back Borstal 1.8m

2016

Emmerdale 6.5m
Tonight 3.4m
Emmerdale 6.3m
Birds Of A Feather 4.7m
Jericho 2.7m

With some good programming coming up, perhaps they can keep it up and this years programmes will be scheduled better.

I was very surprised by the "W" Eastenders annoucement, I thought there was a rule about BBCWW not being able to air something for about 2 years, same day repeat is just begging to be abused, coming soon to Dave, Have I Got Yesterdays News For You etc

That said as some have said above, I would be surprised if this lasts, people who miss EE will get it from iPlayer, not from a Pay TV channel, dont must TV packages have PVRs where you can series link a show? I know EastEnders is series linked on my PVR, I dont ever need to watch it on BBC 3. This behaviour is even more likely on Pay TV.

I thought his Christmas special was excellent so I'm pleased about this, but it's following quite a few of these theatre based shows and none of them.have set the ratings alight

There's nowt as queer as folk. I hear that some people scroll through their EPGs looking for something to watch. Others with PVRs don't bother series linking and recording and watch poor quality +1 channels.

Would those without iPlayer on their TV rather wait for a linear broadcast?

Is EE uploaded to iPlayer soon after transmission?

Incidentally, the most recent TV Player Report gives EE's highest iPlayer rating as 182k. Much lower than the BBC Three repeat.
