There was quite a bit at train stations on large billboards, plus a lot of free publicity in the newspapers regarding the content - which didn't seem overly violent but should have pricked the interest of people to give it a go, so that they could also be 'shocked'.

"Oh but viewers will record us and watch later, the consolidated figures will show we're doing well!"

All very well saying that when you're losing to SCD but whenever you're beating SCD you don't seem to mention it Cowell!

People keep saying X Factor's been going down year after year anyway, which may be true, but has it ever been so consistent with posting 6 million figures before? Even making allowances for the Rugby that's embarrassing. Totally deserved though - they made a huge song and dance (no puns intended) about a refresh when literally all they did was take out anything that remotely worked (Dermot and Louis for two) and replaced them with nothing or really lame, amateur stuff. Sure people may have wanted changes but it's better to keep what is successful if you have no good ideas for what to replace it with. They even brought in the BGT producer to run it this year, I have no idea what would have been different without them - let's hope BGT isn't a producer down and suffers, that would be almost as ironic as the X Factor USA shambles.

It is a rare thing indeed if I watch ITV and, living in Leicester, I didn't see a single billboard for this.

Once a week I look through the 'new series' section on my Sky+ app. It it looks interesting I'll record it. Often I won't watch it until I see the ratings/reviews after it has been shown. I don't want to waste my time watching a new series which is a dud.

Erm yes that's how ratings work. It gets less viewers excluding +1 .

On that basis, TXF was barely ahead of the BBC regional news.

ITV looked very stable during Jekyll & Hyde. Any new viewers, however, went straight to BBC One waiting for Strictly results to start.; as if people had Countryfile on in the background.

Looks like 2m then went to ITV at 8pm. You can see the ad break where the figures drop at 2015 and 2045.

The audience really jumped for XF after SCD finished, which proves that millions want to watch BOTH.

If they kept away from SCD they could've had an average of 7m. But since they drag it out and insist on starting halfway through SCD I have no sympathy.

EDIT: They got good numbers last Sunday because they started before SCD so why didn't they do the same this week (maybe 6.30-8pm), and save J&H for 8-9pm.

Could this turn out well for ITV in the long run if the BBC is seen as damaging their shows and causing them to lose money with this whole Charter Renewal thing? Even though it's ITV's fault for their ratings failures.

As I revealed earlier, NOTHING happened in the first half hour of TXF. What sensible viewers will have done is record it and whizz through the lengthy recap and other filler. That as well as Strictly is why that segment was so low.

Yes, and I don't see why we are forced to acknowledge +1 anyway. ALL the channels in the Top 20 or whatever should have a +1 to do this, and they don't.

And where I saw it was at a train station a couple of days ago. I don't read print newspapers so never would have seen it there.

I just think ITV have got out of the habit of producing any kind of fantasy type drama since Primeval went and as such people just don't look there for it. And 6:30pm seems a very odd start time for what is normally such a dark story.

Countryfile: 7.04m (33.8%)
Strictly: 8.66m (35.8%)

Jekyll & Hyde: 3.36m (15.7%)
The X Factor: 6.47m (27.0%)

Just being neutral if you look at it the other way it will consolidate to 7.5/8m still making it one of the most watched shows even beating many cs episodes. So even though it's down yoy unfortunately it's not going anywhere so no matter how much it's sagged off it doesn't change its still extremely popular, profitable etc.

I never watched it like, but when x factor n strictly first started didnt they debut with low number? And then bang they started to rate alot higher with other series, could j & h rise the next coming weeks?

Shame about the J&H figure as it was really good, but deserved as it was in such a stupid slot!
I thought a 9pm weekday slot would have been ideal, or wait until January and put it in a 9pm Sunday slot, once i'm a celeb, christmas etc is all out of the way. It could have been a brilliant winter drama for them, but they've ruined that now.

Lets hope they don't mess up Beowulf. I saw a promo for that last night, and it looked more like a film promo, it looks amazing! Maybe that will be there big winter drama?

Couldn't completely rule it out but it's very unusual these days for dramas to grow, especially in this genre.

9pm is quite late for a family drama show. It has no reason to be post-watershed. Latest I'd put it would be 8pm.

Agreed. It still does the business for ITV and attracts the important 16-34's and 18-49's, whereas two thirds of SCD viewers will be 65+, which wouldn't be profitable for a commercial broadcaster.

Thanks for being the 876th poster to point out that TXF still pulls big ratings, despite its decline over the last few years.

Of course it does. Its problem is that it costs a fortune to produce. That was fine when it was pulling mega-ratings five years ago, but it isn't now. It will reach a stage where the viewing figures make it uneconomic.

The MTV music awards seem to be struggling both here and the USA. Last night's awards were broadcast on 10 channels (All 8 MTV channels. VH1, C5) presumably to mop up as many viewers as possible.

They did this in the US a few months ago, airing the MTV VMAs on a whole host of channels including Comedy Central, but it didn't really help.. http://variety.com/2015/music/news/v...tv-1201581910/

I do think J&H- unusually- will grow. It's being condemned on the front page of the Daily Mail this morning. The publicity and controversy will please ITV bosses, even if the initial ratings don't.

Untrue. Two thirds of Strictly viewers are UNDER 65. Around 30% are actually under 44.

A commercial broadcaster would kill for it.
