I'm still watching and really enjoyed it tonight. I can't see overseas sales saving it - why would anyone purchase it when it's dying in it's domestic market?

How did they get themselves into that position though? They ended up being rushed for time yesterday as well and, after one performance, the judges were being told to rap it up quickly. Admittedly the 500 minutes of adverts didn't help but...


I wonder if Downton Abbey might become a real staple of an ITV Christmas for years to come. They say it's the last episode but I wouldn't be surprised if they continually commission a one off episode each year.

Possibly with it being the last ever and if itv really play that card. I have changed my mind and now think it will win its slot and be one of the highest rating shows on Christmas day. I am sure it will have a feel good air about it, the only thing not in its favour is, it will be 2 hours long and many may prefer to record it and watch it without the ads. If it doesn't come out on top in the over nights I am sure it will time shift like mad and be top of the heap in the officials.

Possibly, but in away I hope not. I hope it goes out on a high and we remember it for the quality programme it was.

As I recall, we have two new series' involving Michael McIntyre, to come from his new production company with Peter Jones, in 2016. Hopefully one of them will be along the lines of the wonderful Christmas Special from last year, although Wikipedia for some reason classes that as an episode of his since-axed chat show, despite the format of the special being as different from the format of the series as human beings are different from llamas.

Fame Academy will not return, I think we can be sure of that. They don't even do the Comic Relief one anymore, and that was always much more fun.

Agree. They really have invested too much into wrapping up all the loose ends to go and resurrect Robert et al for an annual Christmas special. Although I wouldn't rule out a spin-off show - perhaps Daisy and Molesley's adventures during WWII could be explored, for example - Maggie Smith's recent comments make it unequivocally clear that we shan't be seeing her step foot into Highclere Castle again, and you can't have Downton without Violet.

Tonight's episode was absolutely spellbinding from start to finish - I can only hope that both the final final episode can match it, and then the rating soars as high as the show deserves it to.

There was presumably to much material to cut. How long would you have delayed it for, assuming you'd have to pull it worldwide, including digital services like itunes where people (e.g. me) had already paid to watch it & where delaying it would be absurd given the likes of Die Hard 2 and 24 are available there.

Yes I agree DA was superb tonight. I for one will be be watching DA live on Xmas Day in first time since Xmas 2011.

Looks like the early Christmas films are proving a hit for Channnel 5 daytime. The Football League Show is killing their primetime though, a 1.9% share is not going to be acceptable, even the demographics can't be working out at that low level.

I know they only had the Championship this week because of the FA Cup on BBC but that football league programme is performing very poorly for 5 by comparison with its BBC predecessor.

Was never going to work at that time. ITV found that out.

This is true - its just never been tv draw and the fact that the show is poor as well doesnt help.

When it was on the BBC their version was getting 800,000 to one million viewers and it was being shown after 11 p.m., an ideal slot following MOTD, so it's not that fans aren't interested it's the wrong time and the coverage is poor, some of the edits don't even have a commentary, they just float them over a pundit in the studio.

I would imagine that J&H crumbled against that.

I thought that rating was coming for Strictly after last Sunday. The Halloween/Bonfire Night festivities on Saturday this year knocked down a few shows.

Downton Abbey bows out with 8.9m (39%) viewers – the ITV drama's best performance since November 2013.

And fantastic for Downton too, really pleased with that. If that includes +1 then it'll probably be around 8.5m exc. +1.

Downton Abbey will go out with a bang on Christmas Day.

That's a gigantic figure for Strictly, really seems to be picking up momentum this series and taking advantage of the lack of competition- X Factor recovered and the result will either stoke the controversy and turn people off or will increase it next week (even though I didn't think it was a's much of a shock result as some have made out)
