Isn't that what pretty much happened on XF-USA? One act eliminated immediately, and another decided by the judges. I actually liked the first live show of the final season of XF-USA, where all the judges had to choose one of their own acts to go - and then collectively brought back just one of them in the following week's show. However, that eliminates the public vote, and I just don't see that happening.
If it weren't a blatant rip-off of The Voice, I'd definitely go with one act directly through in each category, and then the individual judges decide which of the remaining two in each of their categories stays. That basically focuses the minds a little, and would almost certainly mean the end of the road for people like Max, R&B, Che and Kiera! If that were the format (it probably isn't!), I'd say Seann, 4th Impact, Louisa and Anton would get through directly, and the judges couldn't get rid of Mason, Bupsi or Alien at that early stage (it's a bit of a toss-up who out of Lauren and Kiera would get the girls' spot). Then they bring back Che - cos he's pretty much the best of the 4 initially gone!
Honestly, something really extreme, like a triple elimination in the first show, really ups the fabricated stakes(!), ensures people take more notice of who they actually want to stay - and probably would increase the voting numbers, at a time in the competition where they're usually the lowest. The votes always increase the closer it gets to the final, and ITV/XF have far fewer weeks to get that voting revenue in this year! So they need to do something creative to get people power-voting for their favourites - something like a huge elimination threat would perhaps do that.
