“Hi Hurlley

When LOVEFiLM moved to Amazon in February 2014, your billing was updated, so that you paid for your Prime Instant Video and LOVEFiLM By Post memberships separately. Since then, your LOVEFiLM By Post Price has remained unchanged. In order to continue providing a high quality service, we will be launching new plans and prices for all customers.

To minimise the impact to existing customers we are delaying the launch of new pricing until February 2016. From your February billing date, you will be charged £9.99 per month for your unlimited LOVEFiLM By Post plan, with 2 discs out at-a-time.

Our goal is to continue to offer the same great service and wide selection of titles to watch and we hope you will continue to enjoy the value that you get from LOVEFiLM By Post, which allows you to select from over 80,000 DVD and Blu-ray discs to rent.

For more information about this package change, please visit our Help section.

Kind regards,
LOVEFiLM By Post”

currently its £4 per month which I have to admit is a very good price, but pushing it up to £10 is a bit much since they don't pay tax. I may switch to Cinema Paradiso out of protest. Don't think there are any other rental companies.

I'm paying just over £2 a month at the moment. Haven't had an email yet. We usually only get through a couple of discs a month, I don't think that Lovefilm is worth £10 a month to us.

I think amazon read my complaint on here and revised their email

“Dear Hurlley,

We sent you an e-mail earlier this afternoon detailing some changes to your LOVEFiLM By Post membership. The plan and price we notified you about in the email was incorrect for you. Please accept our sincere apologies for any confusion this may have caused. The correct information is that from your February billing date, you will be charged £11.99 per month for your unlimited LOVEFiLM By Post plan, with 2 discs out at-a-time.

The correct e-mail in full is included below. For more information about this change please visit our help section.

I don't think £10 is bad, when you consider the postage charges involved and the need to employ people to pack up and mail the discs, and the need to have a huge warehouse somewhere to store the discs no-one is renting at any particular time.

Bare in mind Netflix is £6 with none of those costs involved.

Obviously it depends how much you use the service.

Hmm, I got the £9.99 quote for 2 discs at a time, and it's not been corrected to £11.99.
I was on the £7.99 1 disc at a time plus Amazon Prime Instant Video (having reduced from the £9.99 2 disc combo as I wasn't using it much).

The streaming service seemed to be thrown in as a freebie.

When the services were separated I was then paying £5.99 for Amazon Prime Video (not the full Bhuna Prime with free 1-day delivery) plus £2.00 for Lovefilm by Post for unlimited 1 disc at time - the way the revenues were split seemed very unfair on the Lovefilm side of the service, and £2.00 wouldn't even cover the postage of a couple of discs a month.

Still, I didn't feel too bad as I'd dropped down to 1 disc a month and was using the streaming service more.

So not surprised that the Lovefilm side of the business would have been losing lots of money with their share of the split.

What's really annoying is that it is clear that Amazon know the new pricing structure (they have been bumping up 1 disc at a time customers to 2 and 2 disc at a time to 3 and advising people how much it will cost them - but when you go to their website they will not tell you the overall structure, only that it will be publicised in February, presumably too late to cancel or transfer before the first new payment.
EDIT - The website has been updated with the full pricing

"From February 2016, customers will be able to select from three membership plans: 2 rentals per month with 1 disc at home at £4.99 per month, 4 rentals per month with 1 disc at home at £8.99 per month (£7.99 alongside a Prime membership), or unlimited rentals with 2 discs at home at £11.99 per month (£9.99 alongside a Prime membership). If you would prefer to update your plan to one of these, you will be able to do this on your LOVEFiLM By Post membership page from February 2016."

Well my usage is clearly more akin to the £4.99 package so if I don't cancel then will be moving to that.

I've just had this email too. My experience is similar to that of StuartB. The streaming service was added pretty much as a freebie - I never asked for it and, to be honest, haven't used it much.

So, can anyone explain this new pricing to me? Are the new prices for the discs inclusive of the streamimg? Or will that be charged on top?

Can I cancel the streaming and keep getting discs? Or should I just dump Amazon and switch to another disc service.

Streaming is now extra I pay £5.99 for that. If you don't take streaming then the £9.99 post package goes up to £11.99 but the cheapest £4.99 package starts the same.

I've recently cancelled the Lovefilm part and kept the streaming (for now) that was separated out when Lovefilm was taken over by Amazon. I have the option to restart the Lovefilm part in future if I want (but no doubt at the new prices).

I got to the point where I was struggling to add new titles to the queue that I really want to watch and haven't already seen or since bought on DVD/Blu-ray. Many sit on the 'reserved but not yet available' list for eternity while the studio isn't allowing the content via Amazon.

The streaming side has a few interesting titles to keep me going but not liking that many titles have additional rental costs that seem less value than if I was renting the discs (if they were available).

It's sometimes cheaper to buy a DVD used (in good condition from the marketplace sellers) via Amazon (or alternative) where the price is barely over £1 inc postage than it is to rent, which seems bonkers. So this is my preferred route when available. No cost for rewatching either!

I still haven't got an email.

Mine will go from £4 to £9.99 a month according to the FAQ page

It's been dirt cheap for ages so unsurprised by the rises.

The cost of Digital services seem to be going up too much these days as highlighted in a recent article in The Daily Mail. Currently, I use Lovefilm and pay £6.99 a month for 2 discs at home, as well as £6.99 a month for Netflix. Once the price goes up to £11.99 I am going to cancel and just stick with Netflix even though their choice is less. Virgin have already told me that my current bundle M+ is going up by £3.99 in February which will take the monthly fee to £53 a month.

All four of the Digital services providers, according to reports, BT, Talk Talk, Sky and Virginmedia have put their prices up 16 times during the past two years. Yet, we have zero inflation, costs are falling, wage growth is minimal, so why are these companies taking the mick? I think it is about time Ofcom got its finger out and investigated these price rises, after all, Digital Services is an essential part of our lives nowadays, especially Broadband.

Amazon completely ruined lovefilm when they absorbed it into there website. I stuck with it for a while, but got fed up with not being able to get films straight away. The choices just seemed to drop off over night, and you had to wait longer for more titles to become available. Ultimately I think they are going to run down the service, forcing more people to move over to the streaming side.

I stopped using Lovefilm not long after Amazon combined it to their site. I was having problems of thinking what to add anyway.
I am surprised that Amazon is still doing discs by post, I thought they may have closed them down.

I cancelled my disc rental yesterday as I wasn't really using it, partly because I was fed up with getting scratched, unplayable discs and getting replacements which may or may not have been any better. Now stick with streaming / download services which means my disc player is more or less redundant.
