Paul's selling technique on the first task was great. As a user mentioned above, the candidates were more creditable; now it's showy.
I absolutely loved the first series and even though I've watched (and enjoyed) every series since; it remains my favourite. Like many other posters I couldn't stand Saira BUT together with James she was responsible for TV gold when they sold the "Wolf Jackets" on QVC. I'm re-watching series 1 now.
It was brilliant Alan had real fire in his eyes when he pointed that finger and said 'you're fired' In comparison, the current crop of useless people, it's like trying to get a good cuppa from a teabag that has been used 7 times |

I didn't see series 1 when it was first shown (the first series I watched was series 4), but I'm about half way through watching it on YouTube.
The candidates are definitely a lot more credible as businesspeople than the current lot although there's still characters such as Saira, Paul, James and bumbling tory Matthew (who should have been fired earlier than he was I think). I find the boardroom section which now takes up almost half the episode to be the most boring part, so it's nice that series 1 showed a lot less of the boardroom (for that reason and because the set is pretty rubbish!) in favour of showing the candidates in the house. It adds more realism to the show to see the candidates talking about having to take a packed lunch rather than seeming to be robots who don't need to eat, drink or have toilet breaks. I do find it weird that the candidates who survive the boardroom are shown returning to the house in the following episode - it breaks the flow of the episode and also the illusion that the tasks are weekly. Nick and Margaret are also very low profile with hardly any comments to camera. |
