Why didn't the producers hire an American actress as Vicki when she returned in 2002?

It's not like there wasn't any American actressss in the UK at the time, their must be quite a lot living overseas, etc

And it would have save the embarrassment of that awful accent Scarlet what's her face had to put on in the beginning, then change it.... she would have felt American aswell

But she had been there for years since she was younger so she would have developed the accent


And when she came back they had the actress try to put in an American accent (which was awful) , so having an American actress would have made sense

Good point actually. Or at least hire a british actress who can pull of a convincing accent?

One thing I learned from the Vicky Fowler accent saga is that you can go 'travelling' in Europe with a US accent and a few weeks later return sounding like a Brit.

She had developed the accent and then went after a while went back to her native accent.

She wasn't American so having someone American wouldn't have made sense. She played it right. An English woman who had picked up some American.

Having an American actress would have made sense as Vicki Fowler had lived in America since she was around 9, so she could have easily have totally picked up the accent by going to school and mixing with the kids there, with out even realising it

Children pick things up easier than adults do

I remember this was tackled on Points of View at the time.

People complained that the actress' accent was starting to develop a London twang after six months.

The problem was, because they film out of sequence the accent was different by episode.

The easiest thing would be to stop moving characters abroad.

I think Angelina Jolie was busy with Tomb Raider.

BIB Exactly plus there were a couple of times when she had a nowhere accent with a different tone of voice than normal. One time she put on a deep voice and a quite frankly very odd accent. The whole thing was a disaster. I read at the time the actress wanted to change the accent probably because she was too lazy to do an American accent. She said Vicki would now speak with a London accent having been in London a while which is crap. My American neighbour has been here years and still speaks with a US accent. I really hope Vicki never comes back. We've had enough returns for now in any case in my opinion.

Vicky's whole characterisation was a mess. You would never have thought that was the daughter of Michelle and Den. They tried to replicate Michelle's storylines with her (the abortion, falling for her college tutor) but it didn't quite work. She had none of the strength of character either of her parents had. The actress was appalling too and not just the accent.

Because whoever hired her was an idiot who didn't realize accents don't change in the space of a few years. Case in point? I have a classmate in one of my classes that was born in the UK. She's 21 and she still has the accent.. She moved here when she was 7.

Perhaps they meant to hire Scarlett Johansson but there was a bit of a mix-up.
