Michael Jackson's career started over 30 years before Bo' Selecta did, Craig David's career started in 2000. It's not unrealistic to assume that the show did affect Craig David's reputation and career somewhat, it's not like he had a long, legendary career behind him when the show started.
how many people actually watched bo selecta? if cd had released some decent material, the record buying public WOULD have bought it regardless of being parodied on tv. bo selecta had very little (if any) impact on craig davids career, it finished over ten years ago - theres no reason that craig david couldnt have carried on releasing decent music, except as ive said - he wasnt good enough, he didnt live up to the hype. |

Definitely and anyone who denies it is having a laugh. What always annoyed me is that the public allowed a completely untalented clown like Leigh Francis to ruin this guys career. Hell i''m not even much of a Craig David fan but it was clear that he had talent.
I think chav culture, which thankfully is not as big as it once was in those days playd a big part in it. |

I think chav culture, which thankfully is not as big as it once was in those days playd a big part in it. it might have made him the butt of ridicule for a while, but it didnt prevent him composing decent new material, his lack of talent was responsible for that. i mean, all he had to do was change his style (appearance) slightly and stop name dropping himself in his tracks and IF the track was good enough, people would certainly look past bo selecta and bought it. the notion that people wouldnt have bought a good craig david track 'because bo selecta took the piss out of him' is absurd. and i reckon leigh francis is one of the most consistently funny people on tv over the last 15 years. his act might be worn, cheesy, predictable and rude, but he is still worth watching and still makes me laugh (which after nearly 60 years is no mean achievement!) . |

Craig David went the of many acts who start off as guest vocalists. A big initial launch as the singer of someone elses song, a decent debut but failed to keep up the momentum. The whole UK Garage scene, which is where Craig made his name, was very much of it's time and dated very quickly. Craigs problem is that he tried to move away from the scene that made him but he went in a direction that wasn't very good - imo of course |

I agree. Bo Selecta was a late night show on C4 so it isn't like it was watched by 10 million every week.

People have been taking the rise out of Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan and the like for years.
Never did them any harm... |

Personally, I don't think Bo ruined his career, he was even on the show himself at one point. Bo took the piss out of everyone, Craig David being the one one whose "career was ruined by the show"
I love Leigh Francis but Craig David's music was alright too! |

From pretty good memory Hitstastic is pretty much on the money.
I remember Leigh Francis (as himself not as any of his personas) did a fairly serious Radio interview in the mid to late 2000s where he admitted that his inspiration to take the P out of Craig David came after watching his spoilt child behaviour at the BRITs the year he was nominated for everything he could have been, yet won nothing, when he ad-libbed his displeasure when performing at said awards when he was booked to perform late in the show (so he obviously put 2 + 2 together to come up with 5 thinking it was going to be his year to clean up). He also despite initially approving of Bo Selecta taking the michael (Shamon muthafocka) out of him, quickly changed his tune and subsequently did several interviews criticising the show for destroying his career. When the truth of the matter is the lead single of his second album helped kill his career. (Just like Natasha Bedingfield - I Wanna Have Your Babies) Not only was What's Your Flava a really poor effort, but the Charlie & The Chocolate Factory inspired video made him look incredibly conceited ... like Kanye West but without the talent to back it up. Just watch the video and cringe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJbH81Vu1Tw |

He's rolling in money these days. He lives in LA and is still a song writer.

Hello is just a really well written pop song - it's not trying desperately hard to be something it isn't, it's just a straight up pop song without any gimmicks. I Wanna Have You Babies was like, soooo!!! ( ) American anyone would think Natasha Bedingfield was American when that turgid crap was released. To think this was the same women who brought out These Words and Unwritten. It was like a different artist altogether. As for Craig, I never really "got" him as an artist anyways aside from his song with Artful Dodger which was just a simple but fan dance track. Fill Me In wasn't so bad but to this day I've never liked 7 Days that much. Walking Away was his best single from that time, but then he made it in America, got a big budget and came back with What's Your Flavour? It's like some tragic novelty song but the worst thing is that it was done in a serious sexualised manner. lol"can i try your black cherry?". Oh-er!!!

This is why British artists should make British music.

No, because he seems to have been busy recently looking at his Twitter feed, still involved in the music industry. I also checked out Wikipedia and saw that he had more hits and albums over a longer period of time than I recalled.
He still seems to have a career touring as well as a writer, so it's not really ruined, he is just not as successful and famous as he once was. I do think Bo Selecta contributed to the public's perception of him being someone 'uncool' and not to be taken seriously. But I also think (as someone mentioned earlier in the thread) his music became dated very quickly which cannot have helped and neither will his alleged strop at the Brits. So a few factors worked against him in terms of remaining an artist who sells many records. |

It's a pity it didn't make Kelly Osbourne disappear.

Unless there is a statute of limitations he could try suing Keith Lemon for loss of earnings. That might work.

I remember seeing him at a Radio One roadshow concert in Leicester in 2001, along with Kylie and Posh Spice, among others. He was wailing out his song, ad libbing, wailing and riffing, for what felt like an eternity. Absoloutely God awful. And on a bill that included Victoria Beckham, that's saying something. Half the crowd gave up and sat down in boredom thinking it would never end!

If it did, I'll also give some credit to my cousin Shaun, who played 'Jonesy', Caraaaaaig's silent guitarist, and co-wrote and performed all the music on Bo Selecta!

I was just thinking that the whole ukgarage scene was great a real breath of fresh air and a time for young black musicians to be in the fore front of a vibrant and exciting scene, but like any other scene its pounced on , popular over exposed, and then we had to put up with dreadful guitar bands again. a bit of racism attached to it too, same as disco, popular then destroyed by narrow minded music how many bands do the same thing with the same 3 chords . well no more, but craigs first few single and the album they were great current in the now epic songs.
