It may not have helped, but I think his star was waning or perhaps even had waned a bit already by the time Bo Selecta really became a known quantity.

I can remember being one of 3 people in my classes at college who had even seen Bo Selecta during the first series. It seemed to take off more during the 2nd series, which was on in 2003, and of course culminated with 'Proper Crimbo' at the end of the year.

Seriously though, his music got too "Americanized" for the UK market. I mean what was he thinking with a song like "What's Your Flava?"🙄
Craigy boy, you are a wee lad from Southampton....nobody speaks like that there!
Makson, you've put exactly what I was going to write.

I didn't mind 'What's Your Flava' but that was mainly because I liked the backing track, which had a bit of an 80s vibe to my ears. A lot of my friends thought it was rubbish and couldn't take the fact he was trying out a more USA sound seriously and thought the actual American acts/artists did it a lot better, which I guess they did!
I had a few friends at the time - I was in college - who liked/had liked the UK garage sound and they preferred his earlier work.
Like maninthequeue's post, I also don't think the video for 'What's Your Flava' helped much either, with him dressed as Willy Wonka!

The follow-up single, 'Rise and Fall,' which was the duet with Sting that had Sting singing his own 'Shape of My Heart' was probably more accessible to people who wouldn't have liked his earlier efforts: in fact I can remember that it got played on Radio 2 at the time. I don't recall hearing it a lot on Radio 1. I don't think it would have done a lot for people who had liked his stuff with Artful Dodger at any rate because it did sound like a typical middle of the road pop track from around that time.

In a similar way as slimelinetonic put, I also don't think it helped that music seemed to be shifting quite a bit, quite quickly in the early 2000s. You had a lot of acts and bands who had a great start in 1999/2000 but music had moved on when their 2nd or 3rd albums came out. You only have to look at the number of one hit wonders and tracks that were no. 1 for a mere week or 2 weeks and then gone, sometimes never to be heard from again around that time. I'd agree in some respects that rock/'guitar bands' became quite big again around the time of Craig's second album,

A lot of my friends' tastes changed quite drastically around that time, and I think if you look at what was doing very well in the charts when Craig's second album and the singles were released compared to what was doing well in the charts when his first album and singles were out, to an extent you can see how tastes were changing.

Chili Peppers, acts like Avril Lavigne and of course Justin Timberlake's solo career getting off to a great start probably eclipsed Craig's 2nd album considerably in hindsight.

Heard 'Walking Away' on the radio yesterday, reminded me what a tune it was back in the day.

Still makes me laugh he was nominated for six Brits and (pardon the pun) walked away with.........none.

In a way I'd say it did, he's just a joke figure after that and even before that but it ruined him

Craig should make his own comedy show and parody Leigh Francis?

A joke from 2000 ish

Shaggy, Craig David and Britney Spears were all sharing a lift when someone farted.
"it wasn't me! " said Shaggy. "I'm walking away " said Craig David.
And Britney said.....
"oops I did it again"

. .
GUFFAW
Thank you early naughties radio presenters for this utter gem...
