Amy Winehouse/Andrea Motis
A lot of stuff in the media about the Ami Winehouse film biography.
Personally, I thought she was more famous for her personal life than her musical abilities. I'm not saying she was a bad singer, some of her earlier recordings when she was a stone heaver with fewer tattoos, I thought were quite good. But I never thought as a jazz singer, she was anything special. Everyone has their own opinions, but here I'm comparing "like for like." As a recording, I think the orchestration is bog awful, but she makes a reasonable attempt at a song, previously recorded by many. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDiGWDXdMac Now here, I think the interpretation is more sensitive, with a better range and voice control (and singing in a foreign language). Added to that, she plays alto sax and trumpet (on other recordings) to a professional jazz standard. Here, recorded in 2013, she's still seventeen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWxriapsDes |

They are not like for like artists, so I'm sure the comparison is fair.
Simply put, Andrea is a great musician and Amy is a great artist. Time might tell us something else. |
