Mark was doing theatre work before Strictly - I saw him in Hairspray the week before it started

What Strictly did was give Matt some leverage to negotiate for The One Show job. Without it I suspect he'd have had to give up Countryfile because that used to film Monday/Tuesday and he would be committed to The One Show then.
Basically they moved the entire filming schedule for Countryfile to Thursday/Friday to accommodate him doing The One Show. Without Strictly showing he could cope with the pressure of multiple shows at once and was popular I don't think that would have happened...
