Is she? What evidence do you have for that? Admittedly I don't pay close attention these days, but I don't recall her ever mentioning it these days, so I assumed she grew out of it like most kids do.

Like most kids do..?

Maybe other people assume Christianity is just a phase but I must have missed the storyline where Sophie announced she wasn't a Christian anymore.

Teenagers often go through many phases, whether it be religion, politics or whatever and yes, most of them do grow out of these phases.

Sophie 'acquired' her Christianity some years ago as a teenager - it was certainly never a feature while she was growing up with Kev and Sally. And no, they haven't announced that she's renounced it, it is just never mentioned any more in the scripts - because it was a plot device. Nobody's saying she's turned into an atheist - just a regular person who generally tries to do the right thing without making it into some religious song and dance.

My point is that on DS her 'Christianity' is invariably used as a stick to beat her with because she's not a particularly popular character on here. I'm simply saying it's not relevant to her character any more, has been forgotten about by everybody except DS and people should stop harping on about it every time the character does/says something they don't like.

I suppose it is hard to say for sure whether she is still a practicing Christian or not. Has she not had any scenes with Billy? I thought she involved in one of the fund raising storylines soon after he came in. And of course she met Maddy at a homeless centre only 2 Xmas' ago so was still doing 'good deeds' even if the programme wasn't directly run by the Church. But I think it was mentioned it was.

Ii think it is more likely that she still is a Christian but has lost some of her preachiness about it, she still goes to Church but doesn't feel the need to mention it all the time - any more than Emily does.

It is possible that she has just 'grown out of it' of course but i think they would have made more of a storyline out of it - rejecting her faith after Maddy's death for example.

I'm not sure that people use the Christianity stick to beat her with simply because they don'( like her. I think it is more that Christians (or indeed anybody with a religious faith) are so under represented in Soaps that they are held up to much higher standards than everybody else so it is easy to latch onto if they behave anything less than perfectly. And Sophie does behave a lot less than perfectly a lot of the time but then she is human.

I think she would be criticized for a lot of things anyway, her refusing to understand why Jenna could not go out with her when she was a Patient and then showing little or no remorse when it did lead to her losing her career. Stealing Kevin's money and again showing little or no remorse for it, and apparently forgetting to pay it back.

Now they would be annoying and unlikeable in even a normal, flawed character, but her having stated that she tries to live her life to higher standards, seems to make it worse to many.

Her Chriistianity (or lack of it) was actually briefly mentioned just a few episodes back. Kevin asked what had happened to her "Christian spirit" and she replied that she hadn't felt much of that since Maddie died. So it hasn't been completely forgotten about.

I wish she'd re-embrace her religion and join a convent. Then we wouldn't have to suffer through any more of her tedious romances.
