I tend to think they should've either not done it or followed through on it.
I think the article only superficially addresses the problems with the show. Because Eastenders has never been completely believable,
of course not. The problem is that
even within the show's internal logic, it's beginning to look completely ridiculous. It doesn't even feel like the characters live there sometimes and Albert Square doesn't feel like an actual place. Instead it all resembles a fan fiction.
Somewhere along the line we've forgotten that explosions and fires and murders and kidnaps are only truly engaging if we
actually care about the characters involved. Otherwise it's simply one exciting episode and then months of boredom. Only familiarity, some decent character writers and a great cast are keeping it going at the moment.
