The only good Halloween week was the first one, when most of the music choices matched the dances (and the costumes). Since then, only a handful of couples every year manage to perform a decent routine and almost all of them are the stronger dancers. The less able dancers are just given a bigger chance than usual to stick out like a sore thumb, as they try to dance awkward choreography to music even more lousy than normal.

Can't remember the last time the show was as dreadful as it was tonight.

I'm just glad Halloween is over. Never mind the program. To be honest I can only remember Jeremy's routine.

I saw a meh paso, followed by a blah Charleston, then an MJ Tribute salsa-ish dance. A Malificent waltz complete with lost wings which baffled Len. Then we had a stompy warped jive, a wolfish AS, a shoehorned paso with tables. A green Pasha, then a sharp brown Tango without a shiny Giovani, the usual dance from Peter & a mummified Samba.

Georgia and Giovanni's tango was super; danced to very fast music and kept in character.

Anita and Gleb were not helped by Anita's over-large headdress, but their dance was beautiful.

Jay and Aliona's dance was also excellent.

Helen and Aljaz did one of the best sambas seen on Strictly, despite the costumes!

Kellie & Kevin's paso lacked authenticity, but was high on entertainment.

Peter seems to have plateaued but wasn't bad.

At the other end of the scale:

Jamelia and Kirsty are about even for me, and I can't see either improving that much.

Katie will do well in ballroom dances, but not her fault she's not getting decent Latin

Jeremy tries his hardest, and was very entertaining tonight.

But none of those 4 are as bad as many in the past.

Then there's poor Carol. She was destined (I think) not to be able to master a rumba - not that she was actually given a rumba to master! And that music was a disgrace.”

I agree, although I thought Peter Andre was much worse than his scores reflected, why the judges' don't pick up on his heavy footedness really baffles me (well the cynic in me could come up with a reason).

Good point! There you are, glass in hand, singing along merrily with no-one to hear, so you're ready to go for it with the rousing next bit, when...... oh it's finished!

Always the same they would be better do Halloween as a non score show and just as entertainment. The costumes and makeup take priority. It's like the hunger games, I mean 6 chairs on X factor ( so I've heard )

I have just seen the show, and after having seen some of the opinions on the forum, thought it would be awful but I have to say I really enjoyed it.

Does anyone know why Bruno came on wearing shorts and T shirt....I don't think it was explained unless I missed it? Also I thought I was reading some negative body language between Len and Bruno. They didn't seem to interact at all.

The judges were portraying the Addams family;
Lurch, Morticia, Gomez and Pugsley

Another stupid phrase to come from the states, we also imported Halloween from them, both should have stayed over there.

It would have been funnier if Bruno had turned up as Wedsnesday instead

I agree about changing the themes. I used to love the Halloween shows for the fun element of cheesiness, but it's become a bit too much in recent years. Maybe they should give Halloween a rest for a couple of years so that it will seem really special when it returns again.

'We' really didn't import Hallowe'en from the US - it has been celebrated in Europe since at least the Middle Ages!

Yeah, it wasn't all bad. But even though there were a couple of great dances, it still might be a good idea to give Halloween a rest for a while.

It was a case of too much style - too little substance but also I feel these theme nights suffer from the big build-up creating excessive expectations.

That's a good idea. It could be like a half term break. Then I could enjoy the dancing just for the entertainment because for some reason I have a problem with Halloween week. I came to terms a few years ago that the entertainment element now took priority over the technical element (get me ), but in Halloween week it's like the entertainment element takes over. I love all the razzmatazz of Halloween, it bugs me when the producers make a mess of things like Carol's music, Anita's horns, etc,.

Apart from the poor music choices and theming, I think the costumes are more extreme than usual.
Anita for example, having to be dropped in on a crane. Doing underarm spins with antelope horns on your head after only one practice run the day before.

All these differences can throw people off the routine they practiced in shorts and a vest for 4 days.

I agree most of the last years show was watchable , last nights wasn't, nothing seem to connect and imho the music was terrible...I did use the FF button for every dance.

I think Kelly and Kevin should have been able to throw the coats off when the music got to the 'schools out' part. The coats and 'odd' skirt made it difficult to see what Kelly was doing.
I'm not sure how good it would have been anyway but I don't think Anton could see properly with that mask. When I rewatched I noticed he missed her and her hands a couple of times. When he was with Claudia he kept pushing it to one side - it looked like it was obscuring his view to the right hand side. It seemed very bulky and fitted poorly.
As you say with Anita the horns and the big neck frill must have been both heavy and restrictive.
I also didn't like Jays make up, it didn't look 'wolfy' particularly just odd and distracting.
They were all very creative and visually good but I think too much emphasis was put on that and not enough on leaving them the ability to actually do their dance unrestricted.

I remember Artem saying when he first got his Phantom mask he couldn't see where Kara was and had to work on it for hours with a chisel. Obviously Anton, with his disdain for all things latin, couldn't be bothered to get his tools out

Halloween night now just seems like an opportunity for the make-up dept. to try and get another technical BAFTA, with little consideration given to how any of it actually works with the dances.
