1) Helen & Aljaz
I thought she improved in this latin number as she dug deeper into the wood with her footing to get stronger legs in the routine (as opposed to dancing light and fluffy on the floor in her salsa). The promenade runs at the very top (where she fans out her arms) was a nice to see, as she was able to breath through the movement and introduce the samba feel. Thought she coped well with the constant music changes in rhythms along with the signature samba roll. I like how she was able to effortlessly shadow Aljaz during the roll, and I especially enjoyed how she didn't forget about her expressive free arm during that move as well. Perhaps it had to do with the music/theme, but I wanted to get the full party-like carnival feel to the routine, as I normally find myself (in private) subtley moving up and down on my chair to a promising performance. The trip was a bit of a surprise. To add to her future performances, if she can add a bit of flair from her ballroom numbers into her latin dances, that would a nice addition. Nonetheless, it's nice seeing the improvement in her dancing as the weeks progress, and Aljaz should be given proper credit for shaping her into a nice dancer.
2) Jay & Aliona
The freeze-frame moment when Jay catches a spinning Aliona towards the end (his nice arm extensions) illustrates the marked improvement in his lines. Enjoyed the foxtrot hold as it looked refined and elegant, and I thought Jay carried out the lifts with effortless ease and careful control (nice to see how Aliona can blend the dismounts in the routine such that they are hardly noticeable as well). I think the lifts are a great addition and example about the versatility of Jay's strength and dance abilities (with no offense or disrespect intended to the male celebs) and an infinite luxury that provides Aliona with lots of material/ideas to work with when choreographing. Dances like the argentine tango and contemporary (ace card) would obviously showcase the full range of motion and lifts that the couple would be capable of. While his dances may probably be compared to his lively week 3 jive as the weeks move along, a passage of time should benefit this couple (performance improvements, music selection, reflection, seasoned experience), as it could serve as a segue into even more accomplished performances down the line.
3) Georgia & Giovanni
Initially worried for a split-second about Georgia's nervous downward glance as she came down the steps (wish she could play it off well like Giovanni next time), as I thought she wasn't confident about the performance right from the outset. But as soon as she assumed the tango 'V' shape hold, looked up and away as if she didn't need reassurance from her partner, it was a beautiful sight to see. I thought Giovanni did a nice job allowing the choreography to breath by pausing in timely moments, such that the music didn't overtake the routine. Thought Georgia's small stature also aided her, enabling her to remain low, compressed, such that she was able to carry out the stop-and-go actions well. In one moment I thought her frame wobble a little bit when they abruptly shifted in hold at sharp angles. Nonetheless, enjoyed the spinning moments after they broke hold midway, as I thought Giovanni brought order to the chaos of the music, and reinforced the tightly, controlled feel of the number. Hoping they can continue building upon this high-scoring performance and take the positives and improvements into next week.
Best of luck to all the celebs and looking forward to their dances.
