In all honesty, I imagine that Grimmy, Rita et all have very little to do with the song choices, or have much input at all, apart from attending the rehearsals the day before the live shows. All this is decided much higher up, which is why in some cases songs can be chosen to do scupper a contestant that they don't want.

It's just the typical XFactor smoke and mirrors game.
