Don't believe in allowing children to go begging. Trick or Treating is just a nasty American import taken up by supermarkets to increase their profits.

Halloween was a Celtic celebration to mark the end of the harvest and beginning of winter. But why let that get in the way of profits. Do hope the costumes on sale this year children are finally fireproof and there were no repeats like Claudia Winkleman's daughter being bad;y burned.

Why let the Crucifixion get in the way of Easter eggs and bunnies.

Why let getting into debt, getting drunk and bankrupting yourself buying presents get in the way of what Christmas is really about.

I have to say I agree with your post, Janet 43, but I'm afraid it wont go down well on this forum, which I think is mostly populated by the younger generation, who I imagine would think you are an old fuddy duddy
Used to love Halloween when I was a kid, up here in Scotland everyone made toffee apples, homemade tablet and treacle toffee, and everyone made their own dressing up outfits , adults wouldn't have dreamt of dressing up, either. Too Americanized now, glad it's over. Guesss I'm an old fuddy duddy , too.

I have nothing against people celebrating the event as you say dressing up, toffee apples, treacle toffee and, I'd add apple bobbing and pumpkin carving - all for the children. It's the begging aspect in trick or treating imported from the USA, and the selling of flammable children's costumes that I object to.

It just seems that no-one can have fun any more without it being a profitfest for large businesses.

24 years old here, most of my generation think kids trick or treating is "cute" and stock up on tons of sweets. I was there was a way to opt out, sometimes putting a sign in the door saying "Don't knock" doesn't work, the kids parents should respect that.

I don't have a problem with Halloween and much prefer it to bonfire night, but I do have a problem with how commercialised everything is. The worse two being Christmas and Easter, seeing shops with Christmas stuff in them before at the earliest mid-late November is just plain wrong, as is Easter eggs out in February. My brother works in a supermarket and says that around 23rd december, their getting in Easter eggs, which says it all.
