The OTHERS side (Series 9 views and ratings)

I thought I would start a thread to collect other Digital Spy members' reactions that they've publicly posted on other DS threads.
Some venture here and some of them don't venture in here as they deem the official forum too biased (which of course we know, isn't the case) or for a tiny select few, a snobby reason that 'geeks' are beneath them and can't bring themselves to post here.
This collation is purely for reading interest only so please reply to individual quotes in their original forum. You may however post your own views without using quotes.
So without further ado, here are what the 'other' casual viewers have been posting over on the TV:UK forum...

Moffat must have his focus elsewhere because his work for Dr Who has been brilliant in the past.

Ratings are a statistic that can be bent in any direction, depending on personal interest. They are used to serve anyones "best interest".

Opinions vary, and in the end thats all you can say about them. Its nothing to do with majority or consensus...since those who engage on internet sites are a minority in the first place!”

The Zygon Invasion - Overnight Viewing Figures

3.87 million viewers watched Doctor Who: The Zygon Invasion, according to unofficial overnight viewing figures.

Doctor Who had a 19.4% share of the total TV audience, where is was the 5th most watched programme of the day.

Top of the day was Strictly Come Dancing with an audience of 9.35 million watching. The dancing had a nearly 4 million lead over the second placed The X Factor which was placed directly opposite Doctor Who, and managed 5.63 million.

The Rugby Cup Final, shown on ITV in the afternoon, had 4.92 million watching, while Pointless Celebrities, for the first time, managed to beat the Doctor in the overnight figures, although this position is likely to be reversed when the final figures are published next week.

Overall Doctor Who currently stands as 38th for the week.”

The Zygon story felt like a rehash of the Sontaran storyline from series 4 complete with cloned bad companion and UNIT in trouble. I felt bored watching and whilst it was by no means drivel, it didn't excite me. I know many people think the Guitar playing doctor is cool, I'm afraid I don't. I also object strongly to the removal of the sonic screwdriver, a fundamental necessity in my book, and to replace that with non-sensical sonic glasses is a sign that someone thinks their sense of humour is bigger and cleverer than the show.

It also feels out of place at half past eight on an Autumn evening following Strictly. That is not where it should be. Doctor Who should be the event of the evening, not following the event. It just seems that the audience no longer have a desire to watch the show anymore. Perhaps only diehard fans can relate to the characters now. Perhaps only diehard fans appreciate the clever (though predictable) plot twists.

Another issue is the fact that previously in one off stories you could dip in and out and enjoy the story or adventure each week because it was a different one. This year you feel forced to watch because each story is a two parter and because people have plans, or do things at 8pm on a Saturday they just don't want to commit.

Autumn Saturday nights is really missing the "Merlin" factor. There was room in the schedules for both Doctor Who and Merlin and both shows worked well because they sat well in the schedules in the slots they owned. I would urge TPTB to give DW a 2013 style rest next year and come back in 2017 with a bigger, better show with new showrunner and new companions that people can relate to. Revert back to simplistic story telling and fun. In my view, DW has started to take itself far too seriously and sadly, whilst it still watchable, it is starting to look its age. John Nathan Turner springs to mind. Don't let it "jump the shark". It is way too important for that.”

If these numbers don't finally give the Who fanatics a wake-up call, nothing will. It needs to be rested for a good few years and come back with a new showrunner and new leads.”

Some interesting GA points made, and a couple of posters who also frequent this sub-forum.

I still think, in a landscape changed by original programming from Netflix etc, that Dr Who is one of the few shows that compete on a global level.

British TV, by and large, is poor to middling, and often so parochial that it makes me roll my eyes.

I pretty much pay the licence for Dr Who alone, about £10 for 4 episodes a month and some other sundry content.

The rest of it I take a pass, I moved house 2 months ago and I haven't even hooked up my TV yet.

Regarding the second from last quote down in the Ops post, I did think when I heard about the zygon two parter that it would be something a bit too 'back reference-y' and as such inaccessible for some casual viewers, and that comment proves the point.

I thought they did well to actually show the clip from day of the doctor, so that anyone who had watched the 50th would have their memory jogged and be aware, but for anyone who didn't, it's understandable they might be lost. (especially if they didn't watch the 50th, but did watch last years finale, where their was only one Osgood apparent).

For me the show does itself no favours when it back references the past too heavily. Something like the mention of the great fire,or captain Jack in last weeks episode are fine, as they are just quick little nods that will just go over the heads of people who don't know what they are, and aren't too intrusive to the episode or anyone's enjoyment. Making the crux of an episode the basis of something that happened in the show two years ago though, and then during that stopping to have an obscure conversation about question mark clothing just sort of says to people 'if you don't know what were talking about, we don't want your viewership', which is obviously not the intention.

As for your former point, it would be a ridiculous decision to dumb down the program for the casual viewer. Too many programs have gone that way e.g. Panorama, Horizon.

That's not to say it was an amazing episode, it wasn't, but it was still a solid episode which wouldn't have felt out of place in any series of Nu-Who.”
