Is that the thing, where they send you a letter on what the creature is getting up to in exchange for a donation.
That a very laudable thing. The sort of thing I wish I had the extra income for. That said, hamsters seem like an unexotic thing to donate too. I'd rather give my money to something a bit more exciting. A tiger or a gorilla. or something cutier, like a penguin.... |

I 'sponsor' animals at a localish animal sanctuary.
Cats, donkeys, tortoises, pigs - whatever. I have my favourite animals but all living creatures deserve to be looked out for. I also ask for the certificates and everything else to be emailed to the kids so as to save paper/postage and the kids enjoy the updates/literature. |

In that case, £20 each does seem a lot for a hamster, but each to their own, I suppose. |

Are hamsters endangered or otherwise in need of adoption?

Donkeys. Not exotic. But some get worked to death, and need protecting.
Unless these hamsters are being farmed for experiments then I can see why they need an adoption service to protect them.... |

Cats Protections charged me £65 when I adopted Brooke (by which I mean I took her home with me!)
Actually quite the bargin as to get her chipped, neutered and vaccinated would've cost much more than 65 quid! ![]() I also sponser a Cats Protection pen at £15 a month - I get updates on which kitties are benfiting. As it goes it seems to be a maternity one so I get lots piccies of kittens ![]() So £60 sounds fair enough. |

So, once you have adopted these three hamsters, how many will that be in your care?
You have previously said you are a hamster lover (user name gives us a clue) and have loads of them (taking into account that they breed like mice!), where will they all live == in your new abode? I bring this up again (see previous page) because of my love of hamsters and their well-being and your lack of letting us know where or even if they have a place in your new place. |

It's not adoption as in the WWF adopt a panda/tiger that is advertised on TV, it's adoption where you get an animal from a shelter and give a certain donation for it.
Are you getting them from PetsAtHome adoption centre? As theres no fixed amount for that, you donate whatever you want, generally £5 ish for a hamster, so £60 is extremely generous! All the money for PAH adoption pets goes to animal charities so it'll be going to a good cause. Do you still have your Syrians that you were breeding? Or are these dwarfs? |

I kind of gathered that but apart from your moans and groans about the assistance from your various family members and your move, there was no mention of hamsters and I wondered whether they were still around!

Below is what happened
There's a cupboard in the passage that the council wanted done, they wouldn't send letters to people with an appointment on, instead they just wanted to knock on people's doors to do it, they knocked on ours and we asked if we could be done last as we needed to find places for the stuff we had to remove so they said yes that's fine One day we got a knock and it was the supervisor who came in had a look in the cupboard and stormed out, next thing we know two your homes workers are wanting a home visit, apparently the guy had reported us and said we weren't letting them in to do the cupboard unsure emoticon so we made an appointment and they (a worker and a apprentice) came around The woman walked in the living room and snapped "Whars all this like?!?" And then "you can't have all those hamsters you'll have to rehome" told her this wasn't an option and she was like well I'll have to report you to the ASBO team unsure emoticon tried telling we about my disability and how the pets help with my pain etc and she said "oh don't play the disability card! This was me out because I was too angry to say anything else so my partner argued that we are allowed hamsters and it doesn't specify in the tenancy agreement how many and we even asked if that number was ok, he even gave the name of the guy we asked, they weren't interested, so she said shed report it to the ASBO team and we'd get a visit from them So fast forward a few weeks, they wanted another visit, we phoned them and asked what it was about and were told that the neighbours had complained about the smell, funny that since the guy who lives across our corridor didnt even know we had pets till he saw them! We told them it was the bin chute as we live right next to it but they wouldn't have it so we arraigned an appointment This time 4 of them came, the original woman and three of her colleagues, first thing one of them said when they came in was "do you never open a window??" And how it "smells really strong" which was a crock of rubbish as every single cage was spotless, my parter said that smell is subjective and one person saying it smells doesn't mean it does so the rest piped up and were like oh but we all thinks it smells and my partner was like so if you 4 said 2+2=5 that means it's true then? So they said they'd report us to environmental health and they (EH) would be in touch, they also said we were keeping them in "bad conditions" because they were in bin cages That was in June and we've heard nothing from EH but the your homes workers have been hassling us, calling my mobile, ringing the intercom, knocking on the door, looking through the letterbox!! We've refused to have anything to do with them because of the lies they made up We decided enough was enough and started looking for somewhere else to live, found a 2 bed house and put in for it, paid out money and your homes blocked by giving a bad reference, they said there was a environmental order against us which there isn't! |

I can see that maybe one or two hamsters might help manage pain by diverting your mind away, but can't see why 20-odd (and mice) would have any more effect than a couple.
As for the smell - with the best will in the world, even if the cages are clean, rodents (like other animals) do have a smell, so the council people were probably right. You may not smell them as you're used to it. |

I am amazed an adoption is being allowed when we see an animal hoarder we say no straight away, 19 is unless exceptional circumstances too many and will smell no matter how clean they are kept.

You're wasting your breath, I remember surmising at the time of the 'big plan to move' and 'cupboardgate', that it was likely that someone had made complaints about the condition of the flat and she denied it till she was blue in the face (I presume)

I didn't pay anything for the cat I adopted his previous owners had micro chipped him and kept him up to date with injections so the adoption fee was waived. I think the sanctuary were just grateful I took him on as he was hard to home due to his anxiety and neediness.
I will of course make a donation to the sanctuary when finances allow but right now any spare cash is saved in case he needs any veterinary attention. |
