Different stage in the competition, with acts that he didn't want or expect to reach the final stage. So far, in the lives, he seems nicer than usual, praising acts that I think he would have slaughtered previously. Whether that's a conscious effort, and whether it continues to happen, is anyone's guess.
I don't think he's there to be nice either, but I'd prefer him to at least be consistent. Lamenting Keira for her poor performance is a good thing, but to then praise similarly awful acts doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
As for the basing the sing-off judgement on the actual sing-off performance, that's a welcome change, and I hope it continues. Otherwise sing-offs will just begin to feel pointless and futile, as they did in the past.
Agreed with the last part, the comparison made no sense to me at all. Keira has a nice voice when she gets it right, but I haven't seen anything to suggest she can really put on a show. In fact, most times, she appears a bit vacant when she sings, like she's dead behind the eyes.
