It has been Twenty years since Michelle Fowler left Eastenders
I think i remember her last episode when we realised that the father of her baby was Grant and she left in the back of taxi with Julias Theme playing in the background Does anyone here remember the episode and What do you think about recasting the character Do you think it would work as we have not seen her for years

I mentioned a while back that she could easily be recast and got a right telling off on here. Apparently she's an iconic character and a recast would be tantamount to heresy.

Yes it would be. People who just nonchalantly suggest recasts have no understanding that roles that are brought alive and capture the public imaginations are due to the actors that play them, their face IS the character and nobody else could be. They are an absolute last resort in my mind, and even then, best not to bother.

![]() they should pay her a billion pounds to return just so she can leave with Julia's theme. How dare they treat an iconic character like that |

I think I started watching in 94. So I've been watching on and off for 21 years? Jeez. I loved Michelle and hated Grant, though I was only 10. I remember thinking ew! when they hooked up.
The boat for her return sailed a long time ago, I'm afraid. Susan Tully doesn't act anymore. Plus there are all the missed weddings and funerals. We're well into Kathy territory here with missing so much stuff. Though she did outlive everyone except Martin - maybe that was her plan? Maybe Mark Jr will turn up one day (and Vicki? Recast?) to bolster the Fowler unit. I do have fun watching classic EastEnders on YouTube though. 80s Pauline and Michelle are a revelation. Were they intentionally turning Pauline into a terribly bitter and twisted version of Lou in her later years? Terrible character assassination. Not that it has anything to do with Michelle.

Recasting Michelle would not work. Sue Tully was Michelle, there's no two ways about it. Imagine if Grant suddenly came back with a new head; it would be totally bizarre.
I hasten to add that I have no problem with recasts in general, and I think they can actually work very well if done properly. Jacqueline Jossa and Ben Hardy are two examples of recasts that paid off considerably. But recasting long-standing actors/characters that have had a strong public impact is problematic, and in Michelle's case it would provoke a massive 'wtf' from long-term fans. I think they just about got away with recasting Martin. Recasting Michelle, who was there from the very beginning and was a huge part of EastEnders for over ten years, is just asking to fail. |

Most characters can be recast to be fair, there are a select few in soap land that could never be recast , Michelle is one of them
Having said that I would love to see this place react to a suprise duff duff where Michelle and grant turn up at the mitchells both of them complete with new heads |

Getting "Julia's theme" is hardly a badge of honour. It's simply used when the ordinary duff duffs wouldn't be appropriate, not to signify the departure of popular characters. It barely means a thing.
