But there are obvious exceptions, so I don't think there's necessarily a hard and fast rule. Having said this, this is an issue the producers must be aware of.
SCD has always been as much about contestants' personalities as about their dancing - and those that can translate their personalities into dancing really score. Jamelia's bigger problem is that she doesn't have a clear character for audiences to latch onto: that may be the producers' fault in how they edit the footage of her, or it may be that she just doesn't have a recognisable character type in the way that some of the others clearly do.
But I have to congratulate her for having the courage to say what she did. I can't recall anyone else on SCD ever having done that, and at least we don't have a Lisa Snowdon situation here where the judges are over marking a contestant who is clearly unpopular with the majority of the viewing public (as I recall, LS ended up on the dance-off three times).
