Jamelia is not on my favourites list . She's more than a bit tactless , but I think she seems to be working hard enough on her routines and trying her best . I just hope she keeps her brain in gear when discussing Strictly on Loose women . The results could be hilariously bad if she drops yet another clanger .

I think I will get the mods to close this thread. Seems like the girl just cant get a break. This is really so wrong. There are people in this world who have done worse things, said worse things and yet they don't get picked on.

I've not voted at all this series, but if I like Jamelia's routine as much as ive enjoyed the previous three, and she's outside the bottom two next week I might be inspired to give her my first vote.

1) Because she's sweet and endearing and down to earth.
2) Because I believe in merit.
3) Because she's eager to learn and improve.
4) Because I like underdogs.

I wasn't going to comment on this thread but there are certain things I cannot let it pass without correction, so here we go:

BIB1 - Did you really mean that, that anorexic and obese are abnormal? Really? Because they way I see they are people like everybody else. Please reassess the meaning of normality and its contrary for your own benefit, if nothing else.

BIB2 - Valid they may be, as much as my opinions about life on Mars are. But are they accurate? Appropriate? Comprehensive? Well thought? Researched? Nah, don't think so. Do they cause offence? Of course they do. Show any overweight person the comment she made and see their reaction. Would you like to be made to feel like a freak? Abnormal, as you say? To see someone on national television giving such opinions is completely inappropriate for a number of reasons too long to list here


BIB3 - Here you are shouting RACISM having just called fat people abnormal a couple of sentences above. I fricking love when people have no coherence at all whatsoever in a discussion, makes my life so easy

Maybe they will agree with you, maybe they won't, but only on SCD threads do people seek to close down a thread simply because they don't agree with some of the posts that have been made.

As this is my first contribution to this thread you can't mean me, but I do get fed up when some discussions get closed down simply because someone decides they don't like it.

I get fed up of bullying of others and there are posters who are really mean spirited. I am happy to post on threads if they are constructive.

Re-bib: In the case of Jamelia this thread is a re-hash of others, in terms of content. I don't consider it appropriate to discuss Jamelia's participation in Strictly solely in terms of previous comments she has made. This issue has been going on and on and round and round since the beginning of the series.

I think there are plenty of people sticking up for Jamelia on this thread. It's not 100% one-sided.

I read almost all the SCD threads, but I seldom post on more than two at a time (same for The Apprenice, Tv Shows section, and Broadcasting section). I find having more than about 6 threads I've contributed to is too many to keep tabs on (in case anyone has replied to one of my posts), but honestly, I read many more threads than I choose to actively particiipate in, and it's only SCD where I come back and discover closed threads simply because someone didn't like the topic under discussion.

Anorexia stems from an abnormal state of mind. The individual is not abnormal. I would urge anyone who is or knows an anorexic to getting medical help as soon as possible. The obese I see in the same way, but in a lesser extent as obesity is strongly tied to sloth and gluttony so they getting less empathy.

Neither condition is normal - but the more society does normalise these conditions, the more they are perpetuated in our culture.

Of course not, but the post I was responding to seemed to read as though the entire thread was full of nothing but people slagging off Jamelia and I was pointing out that wasn't the case.

Nonetheless, it's noticeable that three of the four black contestants were voted off very quickly - too soon in at least one case - and it's only the judges' persistent positive voting keeping the last one in...

Generally I agree that internet negativity is a very bad thing... But....

SCD is at least in part a popularity contest (I know it shouldn't be, but it is) and before people sign up to do it they should have the self-awareness to know whether they will be unpopular with the voting public or not.

Like I said in an earlier post, I have no idea who Jamilia is or what she might have done to be so unpopular but clearly there is an issue with how she's perceived by the public (Trying to change the public perception of her could be the reason she signed up to do Strictly in the first place maybe?) So she really shouldn't be surprised at what's happened, IMO.

I also don't think it's wrong for people to point out what is obvious, that she's just not that popular (for whatever reason)

It could be that after she made that comment about people "not liking her" the public view will soften a bit. It could do...


Alesha Dixon and Louis Smith both won the competition?

So its OK for the token black person to win. Both Alesha Dixon and Louis Smith are mixed race which makes a lot of difference in the real world of work and competitions IMO and observations. Sorry, I so want to believe that we live in a just society where racism plays no part but it will not be in my time unfortunately.

It depends on what you class as 'constructive' . The 'no longer constructive' thing confuses me . Discussions are a mix of negative and positive and I find most debates enlightening .
I don't mind negative opinions, even on someone I feel positive about . We can't all like the same people , and all sweetness and light would be ridiculous and boring .But I despise tabloid tittle-tattle meant to shit stir quoted as fact, and I particularly dislike nastiness disguised as humour . It's often just a very sleekit way of putting the boot in while pretending to be angelic and above it all .
I also don't like people seeing racism where it doesn't exist . I think it's a cop out used when someone is trying to find an excuse to battle overwhelming negativity about their favourites .
Jamelia has set herself up before the program by opening her mouth before putting her brain in gear, so she got herself off to a bad start , but all she needs to do is knuckle down, stop giggling inanely,work hard and refuse to whine on command for stupid VTs . That way she can survive another week or two . I'm just not into her at all , but I know it must be hard on her to keep getting knocked down and so I wish her well .

Bad start = Her opinions on women's sizing alienated probably 80% of the population . Those not within the range she chose to loftily call "normal" . Very bad call there .
I'm not going to talk about her family , suffice to say there are people who will hold their history against her . That's not tittle-tattle , but fact unfortunately . Mud sticks . On a slightly more humourous/ironic note , she escaped serious punishment for driving offenses by claiming she thought her car insurance renewed itself . Total nonsense excuse , but hey, a judge bought it . Apparently she cried in court then too .

Of course racism exists , and yes I'm sure there are some disinclined to like her due to skin colour , but considering other black contestants and mixed race contestants (as pointed out to you more than once) have either won or done very well then I'm pretty sure that racism isn't to the fore in the Strictly threads .
But we're going round in circles , so I'm out .

Of course, it can't have anything to do with the fact that none of them have been particularly good dancers can it.

A black contestant doesn't have a God given right to receive votes just because they are black. They have to earn their votes just like everyone else.

The best dancers this series by a long way are Jay, Helen, Georgia and Kellie. They happen to be white and there isn't much they can do about that. Until Jamelia starts outdancing all of them consistently she won't be getting my vote...and that isn't because she is black, I wanted Denise Lewis to win series 2 (or like everyone is saying about Alesha and Louis who won does she not count either), it is because she isn't as good as the others.
