No such thing in the US, if you can't bearcat it during the day then you can't bearcat it at anytime. They will show R rated movies during the day hacked to bits.

With regards to the gay character, I see it like this.

No one wants Will and Grace in space (well I hope they don't). The character clearly shouldn't be defined by the fact he/she is gay. However being gay should also not rob that character of the kind of love interests and sexuality that you would expect of heterosexual characters. Ideally the show will ditch the who 'romance of the week' concept but if it's going to have long running 'will they won't they' or love triangles then i'd hope that the gay character is not excluded.

this is true.but I feel the fact is is that most heterosexual characters only have 2 or 3 'love episodes' anyway. so that wud probably be a perfectly normal amount for a gay character to have.

to make a loose comparison - I think VOY & DS9 did this well. we had janeway as a female captain but it wasn't rammed down our throats every of week if you see what I mean. same with sisko- he was black and that was that. bar a couple of episodes here and there it wasn't a theme which was constantly bought up over and over again.

I get that, but what else have they been doing in each series barring DS9. Making contact with new life and exploring worlds they haven't seen before. One of the reasons I haven't seen DS9 "properly" before now is because it wasn't about a ship exploring new places. Initially that's what drew me in ...that and the "space/time", holodeck episodes of TNG.

If you explore space with flat, dull non-characters, you get a flat, dull TV series.

(Yes, I'm looking at you, Enterprise.)

The first two seasons had mainly dull characters, especially Archer and Mayweather, but Reed and Hoshi were also dull and Phlox was the weird alien cllche version of dull. Only Trip, and, to a lesser extent, T'Pol were standout characters.

The writing in the first two seasons didn't provide engaging characters that the audience could identify with. The interesting science fiction, space exploration situations the characters were put in weren't sufficient to overcome that drag.

Later it got better, particularly with Archer's development as a character.

TNG suffered similar problems during its first two seasons when the characters were supposed to be perfect and weren't allowed to have any interpersonal conflicts. It was a constant struggle for the writers to come up with something credible amidst all that Starfleet perfection to cause conflict between the lead characters and so drive the drama.

What Data's internal struggle when he failed the Stratagema game? Picard had to give him a pep talk to get him to come back to duty. Not even Data was perfect.

The Star Trek world has always been portrayed as perfect but there's no such thing in reality.

TNG got stronger as the years went on but some of my favourite episodes were from the first 2 episodes.

There wasn't much in the way of space exploration in that episode, but there was that journey self discovery I was talking about .

None of them were perfect, they all had things to learn. However, "perfect" in the sense that, in the early days, it didn't allow for many significant differences of opinion that would lead to conflict amongst the characters. Off the top of my head I think the first real conflict in that sense was in season 3's The Enemy.

There was definitely conflict between Troi and Riker starting at at Farpoint although of course that relationship improved quickly.

I'm not sure that Crusher was always that fond of Data either. One outburst I remember was when she lost patience with him in the episode Wesley and the children were kidnapped. If you look hard enough the flaws and the tension are there.

Unless you have a very low threshold of what counts as conflict and drama then none of the examples you give can be called controversial. A mild outburst of impatience at most is hardly what you call an dramatic conflict between the characters. Troi and Riker had a past together, so there was some understanable trepidation at meeting again, but hardly what you could call conflict.

Not saying those things didn't happen, of course they did, but it was done in a very placid manner, Roddenberry wouldn't allow it any other way. It's not that there weren't difference of opinions, it was how those differences were handled. Evolving to a state where all differences are handled maturely and amicably is very nobel, it's just not particularly dramatic or entertaining,

But yes I think we're looking at different levels of conflict there. I have a soft spot for the early seasons of TNG. I say I have certain favourites like Skin of Evil or The Arsenal of Freedom.

I know I said the exploration and spacey episodes of TNG drew me in but "Measure or a Man" is a highlight of Season 2 IMO

Mentioned this before but on holiday in Florida in 96 I saw an edited to within an inch of it's life Robocop showing as kids tv at 10am on a Saturday.

Starfleet personnel have always been portrayed as near perfect, (except when they're the villain, a captain who's "gone rogue" or "gone native") that's true (Makes you wonder, though, what all the psychometric tests were for in the Academy )

It's a level of behaviour we should aspire to.

TNG did get much stronger. I think season three was the peak, my favourites being Yesterday's Enterprise and The Offspring.

Going back to the new series:

I'm hearing a lot that that it will definitely concern a major conflict with the Klingons. Also the ship design will be different to what we saw in the teaser.

I had another one of my thoughts - at least with the time setting we will be guaranteed that there are no holodeck episodes No Fairhaven or Vic Fontaine or Robin Hood.

Only shown in the Animated Series, Kirk's original Enterprise was supposed to have a holodeck. Not exactly canon, but there is a possibility for holodeck stories with even fewer safety protocols and more "technical hitches". Not that I think that's necessarily a good idea though!

Klingon conflict makes sense, as it would be pre the peace treaty imposed by the Organians. The Klingons were well known to Kirk & Co and had obviously been a problem for some time.

Wasn't there a TNG episodes where the characters are surprised to see realistic characters in the holodeck? I might have been one where Riker fell in love. The episode suggested that this was a new development, so it would be a stretch to believe that they had anything other than extremely rudimental holo technology 100 years previous. Probably 'soft light' and low levels of interaction.

There's nothing stopping them having a holodeck story if they really wanted to. It would just need to be something like, say, a holodeck on a more advanced species' ship.

Yeah it was 11001001, the one where the Binars needed the Enterprise's computer, took it over, and provided Riker with an exceptionally realistic holodeck character, Minuet, to ahh, "distract" him from regaining control of the main computer.

I don't think the upgrade concerned the realism of holodeck representations of the physical world, but more the subtle complexity of the Minuet character by her behaviour supposedly being realistic enough to fool Riker. She was originally a "one off", specifically created for and tailored to Riker to distract him. No doubt the process could be reproduced later by/for others.

So holodecks realistically presenting an environment possible in DSC. Realistic holodeck characters, probably not so possible.

As Rebelscum suggested an advanced holodeck on another species' ship could be a way round it, if they really wanted to do a holodeck story. Our crew could be thinking they're in jeopardy, not realising it's a holodeck simulation. Could be a bit too much like Shore Leave though.

Somehow, with what we know about how this series is structured, I don't think the holodeck will feature.

Speaking of which, my favourite holodeck ep by far was Ship in a Bottle. Aswell as being a bit of a mind bender and thought provoking, I love Picard's line towards the end of the episode, speaking of their reality "...all this might be an elaborate simulation, running inside a little device sitting on someone's table".

Really not a fan of holodeck episodes. They can be fun (thinking of 'Worst Case Scenario') but generally they are a lazy plot device for writers who can't think of any more space stories to do.

We are going to have real life holodecks a century before Enterprise let alone the original Star Trek series or this new one.

So if they update stuff for the purposes of credibility then holodecks should be in.

The computers in 1960s TV trek are so absurd nowadays that they would look silly compared to anything any of you are using right now. So this new show surely has to make changes like that just to make the show credibly futuristic.

Star Trek lore based on then credible extrapolations from our world 50 years ago (where in real life we still used steam trains and primitive computers were the size of rooms) cannot be more important than updating what future tech would look like compared with 2016 - not 1966.

Not if they want people to be enthralled instead of laugh.

It might be there, just as a bit of background to flesh out the characters.

You know the sort of thing... the odd shot of a character emerging from doors marked "Holodeck" and joining another character in the corridor as they passed, the odd reference to it in conversations.

But hopefully not dealing with a holodeck situation that threatens the ship or someone with holodeck addiction.
