Aside from the design of the ship, nothing I have heard is a negative to me. It looks like it will be Star Trek with stories told in the current TV storytelling style, fit for a 21 century audience.

Have you ever thought of writing for Star Trek?

I wouldn't count on it. After all, it has managed to come back after both Voyager and Enterprise!
Quote:
Discovery is already assured financial success because of the Netflix deal, but even if it turns out to be a relative failure, Star Trek will still come back. Eventually. It's too deeply embedded in popular culture now to ever go away permanently. In that way, Star Trek in the US is like Doctor Who is in the UK and we're just about to reach the end of the equivalent of Doctor Who's 1987-2005 drought.

I want this to be a success. However, I get the feeling that it won't be. I want to be wrong there.

Yes actually, but I don't think they'd take me on.
Temporal shenanigans aside, I didn't mind Enterprise. I was being sarcastic. Obviously it wont ever die. ![]() My thoughts too. It's the ship design that's killing it for me. As strong as the show is, if that design is the one they go with, it's going to take a lot away from the show, not just with that ship, but all the others we'll likely see as well. Just imagine if ST: Nemesis, or even ST: First Contact was shot with ships that look like something out of TOS. It would just look all wrong and yeah, I know we're in a prequel era, but that doesn't mean they need to use a ship that looks like garbage. Even the ENT era ships (NX Class, Intrepid Type and the Challenger Type) look better than the pile of shit that is the Discovery. While visual appeal has its place and is important it really is secondary to character and plot. If the stories are great I can overlook the ship design. |

I can't stand prequels or recasts.
That's what killed Star Trek for me. |

I've just begun a re-watch of Deep Space 9 and I'm enjoying it all over again. I haven't seen it in years, apart from Trials and Tribble-ations. I kept putting off a DS9 re-watch, hoping it would get the TNG HD treatment. I've concluded that, if it's ever going to happen at all, it won't be for several years yet.
![]() Anyway, I'm enjoying the actual episodes. I've now watched the first 7 stories. Unlike the other Star Trek series, which stayed away from characters and any direct reference to previous shows in their early stories, while the show new characters get established, there are lots of returning characters from TNG. In the first 7 stories Picard, Vash, Q, Lursa, B'Etor. We've also had the Enterprise itself (though strangely absent of any TNG characters except Picard). In the main cast there's Chief Miles O'Brien of course and, as a recurring character again, Keiko O'Brien. In these first few stories there have already been explorations of the pasts of Sisko, Dax and Kira and the introduction of major recurring characters Gul Dukat, Garak and Kai Opaka. It's much more character driven than TNG though still very much embedded in the TNG world. |

Maybe some top secret missions into the Neutral Zone to see what the Romulans were up to? That might put a new twist on Trek to have a starship or a Starfleet crew going on covert off-the-book missions rather than seeking out new life etc. |

Interesting. Although "Balance of Terror" had the first contact between humans and Romulans for over a century (according to Spock) so I'm not sure what they're planning to do in the years before TOS when Discovery is set.

Not happy, but I'd rather they take their time and get it right than rush it and c*ck it up.

Kudos to the poster earlier in the thread who was questioning whether they had given themselves enough time to do this.
Does seem odd though; maybe one of the actors they cast was unavailable until later. |

I wonder if they have seen some of the fan comments and thought we need a bit more time to polish the story and concepts, including the ship.

I would rather it be right rather than them rush it out.

Actually as i've rewatched Voyager over the years i've grown to like the characters a little bit more each time. I see what they were trying with Nelix but they just needed to reign him in a bit. And his relationship with Kes was just wrong. Similarly Kim was supposed to be character who we could relate to but I think he was just miscast.
These days my main feelings are that Chakotay was completely wasted - he should have been a lot more combative rather than being Friendzoned by Janeway - and that B'Lana was too weak a character for a Klingon. Been re-watching Voyager on Netflix after such a long time and I agree, especially with Chakotay. He went from a main character to a supporting role as the seasons went along. I'll always have a soft spot for this series over the others though, who doesn't like a Homeward Bound story? Though Ronald D Moore was right about the ship and the crew, Voyager needed to show a bit more wear and tear as time went on. I never cared for Enterprise at all, Trip Tucker and Dr Neel...I mean Phlox especially

Wrong. It's being delayed so that more time can be spent on making sure the finished product is what they envisage. The Good Wife spin-off is merely taking it's broadcast slot. It is happening and for good reasons. It's a shame there will be a slightly longer wait but if it's for the best then so be it.

![]() I'm hoping one of the reasons for this is to (re)design that ship. |

Is there an official reason for the retiming?

"CBS executives stressed that the delay was driven by the need to give the “Star Trek” creative team more time to meet expectations for the series, particularly with special effects. " “We aim to dream big and deliver, and that means making sure the demands of physical and post-production for a show that takes place entirely in space, and the need to meet an air date, don’t result in compromised quality. Before heading into production, we evaluated these realities with our partners at CBS and they agreed: ‘Star Trek’ deserves the very best, and these extra few months will help us achieve a vision we can all be proud of.” As for the fact that they don't have a cast yet, they did specifically say that that wasn't the reason for the delay. |

Everything else (including casting) got knocked over like dominoes as a result, I'd bet. It could have gone ahead without all 13 episodes written, I suppose, but a measly 3 wasn't nearly enough. |
