Never been a fan of the fan films. They tend to be dire. Even the more professional ones with actual actors have an awkward feel to them - like the actors know they're scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

I tend to avoid them at all costs because the acting can be atrocious. Watched Of Gods & Men, wasn't bad. Renegades was a bit of a disappointment and Horizon was ok, let down by terrible acting and dodgy fitting costumes.
Prelude to Axanar was enjoyable. Something different.

At the end of the day making a good film requires a lot of different talents, all at a cost. If any bunch of amateurs with some equipment and a few thousand dollars could replicate proper film making then the large studios would be out of business pretty quickly!
But Prelude was a cut above in my opinion. Some of the dialogue was a bit 'am-dram' at times but generally speaking there was a good pace with some interesting plot.
Prelude to Axanar is the only fan film (or lead in to one) that I've ever watched and thought that it could be half decent. I've not seen of Gods and Men, but both Horizon and Renegades were terrible in my opinion; I know they were fan films with a lower budget, but god, everything about them was unbelievably tacky.

The production values are incredibly faithful to the original series; sometimes it's almost like watching a long lost original episode. The sets and lighting are perfect, and the use of the original incidental music brings a rush of nostalgia. As someone who is old enough to have been brought up on the original series I can appreciate the effort that has been put into these productions.
Okay, the acting isn't great, but Vic Mignogna is hilarious as Kirk. He's obviously studied Shatner's performance in great detail; he gets a lot of the little nuances that only someone who's watched the original series umpteen times would spot.
The stories are a bit too preachy for me (Vic's a born-again Christian), but they're very enjoyable as homages to the OS. I did used to like the New Voyages/Phase II episodes (even though Kirk appeared to be played by Shakin' Stevens) but "...Continues" has surpassed them in terms of enjoyability.

I grew up with TNG, so I never got the TOS nostalgia. Even to this day, I can't enjoyably watch an episode of TOS; too dated for me.

Of course the acid-inspired colour schemes, miniskirts & hairdos, and the overly-dramatic direction all scream 'The 1960s' which may be too camp and dated for younger viewers. But for me, it was exciting and thought-provoking to watch as a child; in my 20s it was camp fun to watch with a group after a night out clubbing (and a bit *erm* worse for wear, shall we say).
It's still the only incarnation of Trek I can happily watch over & over again (which I am at the moment with the BluRays).

I don't know if it's a strictly generational thing or whether different tastes come into it as well but I find TOS completely unwatchable. I tried my best to get into it and made it all the way to halfway through season 2 before giving up.
It's odd though because I really enjoy the films.

I'm hardly objective, since I grew up loving the original series, but I think there is a certain charm to the original series' characters that is lacking in the later series, much though I love (some of) them too. The original crew movies retain that charm but set the characters in an updated visual and story-telling style. There's a certain level of humour that the later series couldn't hope to get away with until TNG went to the movies.
I'm impressed that you watched as many as you did, given that you weren't enjoying them.
Are there any TV series from the 60s that you do enjoy? I've a feeling it's more the style of episodic TV from that era that you don't enjoy, rather than Star Trek itself.

There's also The Doctor in Voyager. And there's Morn in DS9.
Personally, I like most of the characters in DS9, they're a lot more complex than in the other series.

That's a bit subjective really. For example personally I like Picard I wouldn't say he was a character I "truly loved". I think you're underestimating the affection felt towards some of the DS9 characters, even the secondary ones. They were often more fleshed out then the main TNG characters. I ended up caring about Nog, Garack, Rom or even Damar more than I ever cared about Picard. However, as far affection for characters goes, the main TOS three still come out on top.

Yeah, this is a further oddity; whilst I didn't (or don't?) enjoy the TOS series, I did enjoy the TMP films (maybe with the exception to the Motion Picture and Final Frontier).

I never got the 7of9 love in VOY, if anything I cared more about the Doctor and Paris (who was probably the most charismatic guy on the show). As per DS9, Garak, easily. Granted he wasn't a regular, but I loved every scene he was in. Quark and Odo were probably the more interesting characters on the show though, and later, Worf. Then again I also liked the dynamic between Bashir & O'Brian. DS9 had a lot of character development all round to be honest, much better than TNG in that sense.
As per Enterprise, I'd say Trip was the one guy you felt for the most if you followed the storylines, and (similarly to Garak in DS9), Shran was an excellent character in ENT.
TNG didn't allow the characters to express much humour till they went to the movies - starting with the dunking of Worf in Generations. And then Crusher by Data. I disagreed with Geordi - I thought it was funny.
I'm re-watching DS9 at the moment (nearing the end of Season 2), and I have to admit the characters are far better developed than TNG and one result of that is that there is more humour. Odo and Quark especially, but you also have Bashir and Dax, Bashir and O'Brien and Bashir and Garak. DS9 explores the backgrounds of the main characters well too and, even before Worf's arrival and the Dominion War arc, there are several long running threads.
I'm also amazed at just how many character appearances from TNG and references to events in TNG there are (and even the original series - I've just watched Crossover). Quite the opposite of TNG. Berman and Roddenberry felt TNG had to establish itself separately from the orginal series at first. There's just one cameo and one reference to the original series in the whole of TNG's first season.
Voyager awaits a re-watch, but I think generally it handled its characters very badly,

This new show on CBS all access is now pushed back to May 2017, never heard of a major series in the States being launched in late Spring. Not a good sign, with it only being available to see on subscription streaming services in the the US and Europe, it looks doomed from the get go.

Yeah that was announced about the middle of September that Star Trek Discovery was being pushed back to May 2017 as CBS said they didn't want to compromise on quality by rushing it to an air date!

Don't discount the possibility that that will be the next announcement! I think they've already made a serious error of judgement deciding to situate the plot between Enterprise and TOS when the former was a complete flop and the latter has now been pushed onto a new timeline by the revived film series. Enthusiasm is lacking all round at the moment.

Well the numbers don't back up view. Netflix and services like it are the future of TV, even Sky knows this, which is why they have Sky Go.
Besides Netflix know exactly what it's subscribers are watching and so have a very good idea of what a show is worth. This is why they weren't willing to outbid Amazon for the new Top Gear (Grand Tour).
