music origin inaccuracies
Volare by gypsy kings, indeed! One way or another by one direction, I could go on.By surely means the lyricist not singer. Besides for eg Dean Martin, Blondie etc and others were first with the above examples, there are many more. Like Nessun Dorma by Pavarotti, not Puccini and besides Domingo did it better and probably more often considering being on stage almost every day of year

I think they mean the version of a song to be used for example volare by Dean Martin is slow and more akin to foxtrot whereas the Gypsy Kings version is an out and out samba

I think what's more infuriating is the ignorance regarding the Samba. Strictly and DWTS seem adamant to use Spanish songs in place of Portuguese songs. Very odd!

Ok, I admit never heard of it and am quite disappointed Pet Shop Boys didn't write the somg themselves. However the bbcstrictly tagged them along on twitter when they did the Announcement.

A bit off topic but would love to see a couple dancing ( probably professionals or contestants " show dance" ) to Nessun Dorma. Not sure if Dave Arch and singers could manage it but with a one arm lift on the final note it could be a show stopper. Have we ever had a dance to classical music by any contestants ?

Exactly. A song may have many different versions, the most striking example is the music to Anita and Gleb's Waltz last Saturday, the original version is a classic Disney tune, whereas Lana Del Rey's couldn't be more different.
Don't even go there...I could write a whole essay about wrong songs for Sambas. The ones with some sort of Spanish arrangement are not that bad but some choices are completely bizarre. I used to be quite gutted with the choice of music for Latin dances on the show, but at one point just went with it, they are hopeless. |

Yes, I know Tchaikovsky is the original composer but when I mentioned the Lana Del Rey version I was thinking about this one because obviously there are no lyrics in the original version
![]() https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXbHShUnwxY Just to correct myself, the original Samba tunes should be Brazilian, not Portuguese, but I guess Brazilian music is not well known enough worldwide apart from Bossa Nova, hence they won't use it, I guess it would take a lot of research on their part. |

I suppose they could say x's version of the song, but then they would have to "this couples version of a foxtrot (snigger.)

There are so many beautiful traditional ones! or even modern Spanish music.

I know Portuguese is spoken in both Portugal and Brazil; their traditional music, however, couldn't more different.
PS: my parents are Brazilian ![]() It's like Spanish music and Argentinian or Mexican or Cuban. Though a type of flamenco it's from Cuban influence. |

Latin American music is incredibly varied, the music differs from one country to other immensely. Argentina has got the tango, Brazil has got the Samba, Colombia has Cumbia and Vallenato, Cuba has Salsa (which is very popular throughout the continent), etc, etc, etc. I could go on but it'd be a long and boring post

The choice of music may be burdened by copyrights or pr for specific performers. Or limited by the band capabilities.
I am a bit in shock how did Helen and Aljaz get Adele's new song? I didn't know that is even allowed. I think they are set up,for a 40 this week. |

Why would it not be allowed? The BBC approach the performing rights licence holders for the sonсgs they wish to use and negotiate what they can and can't use. The fact that Dave Arch rearranges some of the tracks to fit into the 90 second dance limit is one of the reasons why they get a lot of great music to dance to - they're not straight out performing the original number or simply playing the actual original track through speakers etc (which is what you pay through the nose for usually with music rights).
