I go to a lot of gigs and 99% are enjoyable, there aren't many that I come away from thinking it was crap. I often buy tickets on a bit of a whim though and see bands that I'm not a huge fan of, I make the effort to listen to their albums before I go but I don't know all the words to the songs and stuff. Generally this works out OK and I have a decent time but I don't come away going "wow!" However, last week I went to see Father John Misty (an alter-ego of ex Fleet Foxes drummer Josh Tillman) and it was one of the best gigs I've been to in a while, I absolutely loved every minute.

Has anyone else been to see someone on a bit of a whim (or been dragged to see someone by somebody else) and it's turned out to be fantastic?

I was 'dragged along' to my first Springsteen show.......the rest is history, as they say!

Madness...earlier this year. I had seen The Specials, The Beat and The Selecter in the hey day of Two Tone but Madness have stood the test of time.

It's exactly the opposite to what you asked, but I went to see florence and the machine on a whim and they were terrible and it put me right off them

For me it was Slipknot. Was dating a girl who was super into them, so I got brought along to their show in Wembley back in January.

Now I'm not normally into the whole "growly screamy" type thing, heaviest I like to listen to are Judas Priest and Iron Maiden who aren't exactly heavy, but Slipknot killed it that night, really good live show and crowd interaction, lots of excitement in the air when they hit the stage with the opening band, Korn, to perform a cover of "Sabotage" by Beastie Boys, never known a Wembley crowd get so excited.

Went with a mate to see Fleetwood Mac after his mate cancelled. I was never really a fan but the concert was amazing.

I'd seen the darkness 10 years before, but was reluctant to see them recently at Brixton Academy but they were better than ever!

Not so much on a whim but bought tix for kd lang as Christmas surprise for my then partner who liked her - her voice blew me away and her audience patter was funny too. Enjoyed so much made a point of getting tickets for her next tour

We decided on a whim to go and see Scissor Sisters a few years ago. Normally we wouldn't bother going to the support, but for some reason we did. The support were the Manchester band Hurts. They blew all 4 of us away. Needless to say, the next day we all went out and bought the album and have now attended 3 concerts and are going to see them again in February. Incidentally we haven't been to see Scissor Sisters again.

Wentto see BB King at the Brighton Centre in 1999 and he was very good.

Won a competition on the radio to see Edwin Starr in Liverpool. Only a small venue hardly anyone in there. But he was fantastic sang his heart out like there was a 1000 people there...Wasnt a big fan at the time only knew one song War but he had a fantastic voice.

Why not? I always make an effort for the support acts, I usually find out who they are and check out their music before I go. The only time I don't bother is if I've listened to some of their songs and I really don't like them.

You can discover some hidden gems watching the supports.

I went past the Shepherds Bush Empire last week on the bus and saw Father John Misty was playing. As I'm a fan I thought I would go and see him.

It was completely sold out. So I'm not sure how this "on a whim" business works.

To be fair, I have bought tickets at short notice in the past but they've usually been for gigs that I always intended to go to but sold out quickly. Quite often if you wait until the day of the gig they put more on sale.

I bought the ticket a good few months before the gig but it was on a whim as I just spotted it in an email from the venue and just thought "why not?" This was sold out too which I was quite surprised about as I hadn't realised he was so popular. Nobody else I know apart from one person had even heard of him.

Very true. There are several artists who I first saw as a support act who I've gone on to follow, the most well-known being KT Tunstall and James Blunt. I love it when people say they saw someone headlining at the o2 and I can turn round and say I saw the same act in a club with a couple of hundred people.

We have done ever since. I've only ever seen one truly awful band. I took my daughter to see JLS for her birthday and Oritse's girfriend was in a band called Vida. They were so out of tune.
