The 'Osgood Box' - Theory?
Peter Capaldi
06-11-2015
Hi

Has anyone contemplated the fact that the Osgood box may indeed be 'The Moment' from The Day of The Doctor?

Same shape and size and also has Gallifreyen symbols all over it.

It is also apparently given just after the events that caused the ceasefire in DoTD, which would tie in well with timings.

What do you guys think? Perhaps another Billie Piper cameo?

I heard the theory of it being The Moment floating about on Instagram, though don't think there's anything to it. Of course anything is possible, but it seems kind of pointless if so that the Doctor just has access to The Moment whenever the plot demands (I'd be disappointed), if it were Billie Piper coming back they'd make a huge deal out of it to ramp up publicity and subsequently the viewing figures, and even then The Moment isn't tied to her exclusively but as a means to bring anyone else back would feel like a cheap plot device rather than a decent use of whichever character it assumes the identity of.

I'm sticking to the boring, but more straightforward guess that it contains the already planted Chekhov's Gun that is the Zygon-killing virus that was mentioned in the previous episode. I'm not being particularly imaginative, but then I don't feel this particular plot element demands it

Bad Wolf was just there because she was important to the Doctor so if Osgood was to use it surely it would become someone important to her. The Doctor for instance.

I don't see how Osgood could use it though or why it would be an option. Would it not basically destroy earth? That doesn't sound like much of a solution.

The virus certainly seems more obvious although I'm sure there was mention of how it could kill humans too so I don't see how that could happen. Maybe the changes in terms of the Zygon links now mean that if you kill the Zygon the human link also might die. Regardless, the mention of the virus does strongly suggest it will appear at some point so this the most likely way for that to happen.

I think it is the virus. Otherwise, there'd be no point in having the box at all (well, except to create a red herring).

Given that they've made a point of comparisons with real world migrant and refugee issues, it would be uncomfortable viewing for the story to be resolved by deploying that and killing the Zygons, even if the characters were sure it would kill only the "bad" Zygons. No such resolution is available in the real world. The writer could write the resolution that way, but it would be the type of cop out resolution Tom Tit has already described. It wouldn't point towards any kind of answer in the real world.

Still, the possible deployment of the virus could legitimately be made a major source of dramatic tension.

I took it that it was more a reference to Schroedinger's cat and that whole concept .

So in the event that the human Osgood dies, the Zygon Osgood is murdered by the Doctor thanks to the virus he's concealed inside as a biological weapon?

That makes the quantum leap that the virus is actually deployed though. Sometimes a deterrant is all that is required to keep the peace.

In response, it could very well be the virus (typical thing where a plot device gets mentioned just before utilised), but it is odd that the box is very similar, albeit looking old and 'flatter' for lack of better grammar on my part.

I've suggested Peter on another thread, but have changed my mind. Osgood's first name will be revealed as Pandora. I'm down the bookies first thing tomorrow morning....

You've beaten me to it. The box looks to me like a mini Pandorica - when it's opened in tomorrow's episode, there'll be a tiny Amy Pond inside, who will say "Ok, kid, this is where it gets complicated" (as indeed it would).

When the Virus was mentioned Kate said it was stolen by someone with a TARDIS.

Obviously we are meant to think it was the Doctor but I wonder could it have been another Time Lord?

Maybe UNIT only assumed it was the Doctor.

Maybe the Osgood Box is nothing to do with the Virus but in a later episode Missy returns with the Zygon Virus as part of some cunning plan.

End of the world or Amy back.

That was my thought Osgood can either be seen as a zygon or human

Okay, preachy "real world" solution would be to make everyone the same. Merge the humans & Zygons in some way that they are no longer able to draw the distinction between themselves.

My theory : it's an empty box designed to be used merely as a deterrant - i.e. the ultimate weapon being a fiction. But no one dare use it in case it does cause havoc.

The real use of the box will probably result in the person who initiates it being the victim not the rest of the Zygons or Humans.

Think of the Osgood Box being a little like the Osterhagen Key but without the explosives !

Maybe the box contains Human Osgood's birth certificate and a photo of her father thus proving definitively one way or the other whether she's the daughter of Sgt Osgood from The Daemons

Good theory, Sarge99. I'm guessing that the box is a Macguffin and that the Doctor is seeing how things play out before pulling something out of his sleeves, metaphorically speaking. Just think he's got something, as the 'peace' was always going to be precarious and he has taken this into account. Looking forward to finding out quite soon!

Who knew that the boxes would be empty! A good ploy to keep the peace though!
