hi all, hope someone can help:
I have 2 dvd players, 1 is a daewoo dvd recorder and hdd combi from about a decade ago, and the other is an lg player from about 5 years back, can i get them multi region? can i heck.

my friend is sending me some r4 dvds from australia, and i would rather like to be able to watch them, are there any cheap players that i can get or am i best off going to somewhere like the bhf furniture store and googling the models they have in on the day?

I'd tend not to recommend an old DVD player from a second-hand source, not least because there's a good chance it may fail in a fairly short time.

The most 'hackable' DVD players tended to be the 'own brand' cheapies - I'd have a look on-line at the options (from the usual suspects, Currys, Tesco, Argos etc) and then put the model(s) into Google and see which ones have the highest success rate.

The cheapies only seem to be £20 for a new one,

The 'branded' ones - Sony, Phiilps etc never seemed to be quite so easy to change presumably because they use better 'software' in them which is more 'locked'.

If you install 'dvd region killer' on a pc, you will be able to watch them on a pc, and if you have a relatively modern pc, just connect it to a tv using hdmi cable or chromecast etc.

Sony never made unlocking their DVD players THAT hard! Yes - it needed a remote code which the "user remote control" could not generate but - given access to any One4All remote - it was dead easy to programme it!

Once this was done the player was region free for the rest of its life.

I regularly buy DVDs from Australia and they work on my Xbox One.

You shouldn't have an issue if they are R2/R4 discs, so I'd wait and try them first before buying a new player, if for some reason they do not play, you can pick up a multiregion Panasonic DVD S500 for £38 on Amazon.

VLC Media Player just seems to be able to play any region DVDs without doing anything to unlock the drive etc, seems they don't agree with what is obviously a pretty pathetic restriction and luckily pretty easily overcome.

I have this but don't need to use it too much, a Sony region free DVD player - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-DVP-SR1...er+region+free

Region locking of DVD players has been outlawed in Australia as uncompetitive. So perhaps the DVDs there are region free as well.

It's DVD players in Aus that have to be sold region free by law. The discs are still regionally coded.

Same with Blu-ray. Not that many Blu-rays discs are coded.

My advice to the OP is to download a copy of DVD Shrink, rip the disc to your hard drive, tick the remove region coding box, and burn the files to a blank DVD disc.

This is a myth that keeps reappearing. Players are not region free as standard in Australia as the law stands it's not illegal to modify a player to be region-free. http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/c...131-1qs42.html

I have bought a few Australian DVD's and I think most of them were coded for region 2+4
