Hudl 2 not updating to Android 5.1
I had the preliminary update several weeks ago but I'm not getting the update notification 'star' to get Android 5.1. When I go to check for updates, I'm informed that the last update was on 01 October 2015 and that my Hudl 2 is Up-to-Date.
Is this update similar to Windows 10 whereby you have to keep waiting for the notification symbol before you can upgrade? |

Have you tried turning it off and on again? (sorry if it sounds sarcastic, I'm being serious)
It sounds like the thing that checks for updates might be "stuck" and if you haven't turned the tablet off recently, that may be why In my case the second update came immediately after the first was installed |

I gather that Tesco have / are stopping selling these. Presumably there won't be any updates in the future.

True - and a shame as this tablet is unrivalled at this price point and some way beyond, particularity the display. It's because Tesco are "refocusing" so a lot of their media, mobile and tech ventures have been cut unceremoniously. You simply don't set customers adrift like that. Tesco's cold ruthlessness in killing their competition during their rise is evidently alive and well during their fall. Looking at rival tablets, even at £100+ more expensive, the screen resolutions are disappointing. Tesco should sell the Hudl brand and business to someone else looking for a foothold in this market as it was hugely successful. I'd happily have paid £150 for one as the specs were great.

Try Force Stopping and Clearing Cache under Settings, Apps, All (or Running) for the entry "hudl updates". You could also try a factory reset if you don't mind setting it up again (Settings, Backup and reset).

The * has just reappeared on my Hudl 2 (running KitKat 4.4.2 as I decided not to be an early adopter), offering the 5.1 update again.
It seems they haven't forgotten about us. I guess I'll have to update now as this might be our last chance. ---- Edit: after reading the modaco hudl2 forum, I'm back where I was two months ago and thinking I might be better off sticking with KitKat. I don't want to root it at the moment, but it seems that Lollipop on it isn't yet rootable if I did, and of course you can't revert to KitKat. Grrrr. |

If it's anything like on my Nexus 7 then avoid Android 5 like the plague. It turned my Nexus into a virtual brick (incredibly slow response to doing anything) and I can't roll back to 4.4.

Lollipop runs pretty well on my Hudl 2. It is worth the upgrade. |

I've got a hudl 1 . I'm not bothered about what android it runs but I am concerned about the future. Will it just stop working at some point or will there be a gradual draw or what

You will still be able to surf, view videos etc. I doubt you would have any major issues in the next two to three years or so. |

Thanks. I'm mainly keeping it because of the micro HDMI port so it connects easily to the telly.

The uHDMI socket is a useful feature, but going forwards I expect most video related apps which support screen-mirroring will have Chromecast support, which is a lot more convenient than fiddling around with moving the tablet to within cable range of a TV and connecting it.
As has been said, the hardware should work for many years provided it is treated well. Software support is an altogether different issue and some apps may not allow you to update to later versions at some point, which in turn may mean they stop working. By the time that happens, given how Android update support across all manufacturers is so hit and miss (mainly miss) I wouldn't worry about it for a year or two. Or three. |

Spotted the * asterisk yesterday whereupon it downloaded and installed the preliminary update. This morning it downloaded and installed Android 5.1 successfully, after a few nervous moments when the tablet seemed to freeze for long periods. Seems to be working OK so far.
Going on holiday in a few days time so hope it keeps working, as I use it to program my Humax HDR from abroad. |

I rolled mine back (2012) to 4.4 and the difference was unbeleivable . It took a while to track down easy to follow instructions but at least it's now useable again .
